Ki or chi (depending on the cultural background of the word's use) is the kinetic energy or force that is said to be within us all, as spider tiger said it's not a mystical force (Like The Force from the Star Wars movie franchise). but is helped by breathing and focusing your confidence and positive ideas and is the spiritual aspect that of the Martial Arts disciplines are based on.

Martial Arts are 80% spiritual (not to be confused with religion, I am also a christian, with my faith and firm belief in God, which Martial Arts has reinforced those beliefs) and 20% physical

many times it's linked to pressure points or "chi lines" or points of life in the body and is also used in medicine, by manipulating these lines with a simple but forceful strike can injure an opponent or even kill them, or in the medical field to aid in healing injury or recovery.

but oftentimes chi is your ability to focus your power or the kinetic energy from a strike to an opponent to cause injury or a moment of distraction.

In Tang Soo Do ( a Korean martial art much like TKD) we Call it Neh Gung or focus and is one of our eight key concepts which is shin tong il (concentration)

In martial arts that have the added ability of throwing an opponent (Judo, Aikido, Hapkido), the ki aspect is using the opponent's energy against them to protect yourself.

Ki/chi is crap. Many martial artist want to pretend they have this power that is within. I love martial arts and have been studying for a long time. But NOT once have I ever seen Ki/chi demonstrated that could not be explained away. Dont buy into this hocus pocus part of the martial arts. It's stupid and a lie.

I remember seeing this video on T.V. with this "Chi Master" who showed how he could knock people over with his Chi. they were falling all over the place. However the minute the scientist replaced his students with themselves all of a sudden he had lost this "magical" power. Oh the master was George Dillman.

Train VERY hard and you will gain real power.

Just about all of the traditional martial arts use this concept. It enhances strength.

Your Ki is your life energy, and in martial arts it is channelled by a visualisation type of mental process. It's difficult to explain, but effective. You can do stuff with your Ki without being a martial artist. Try this: On a very crowded train platform, visualise your ki as a forcefield extending in a path before you. You will find you are able to move through the crowd more easily.

In Okinawan karate ki is a very complex concept. Inner spirit is a close English translation.
Just like the military teaches PMA (positive mental attitude) the Okinawans under stood the power of positive thought.
If you believe you are going to block an attack then you will be more likely to block an attack. You must envision what you are doing in your mind and then make the body do it. This goes for everything you do.
This covers the inner spirit aspect.
Ki also relates to your body. You want your body to be aligned with the mind. Deep breathing provides extra oxygen to the system, this keep the brain thinking clearly and the muscles loose. You want your outward body to match your inner attitude, be confident, secure and know what you are capable of.
Ki as energy, ki also represents different physics concepts in relation to body movement. Ki can also be translated to mean energy. But a physical energy, not ki as a mysterious energy, we do not teach ki as a mystical force.

Ki or chi means energy. Depending on who you ask the answers will fall into the categories of either: physical energy, mental energy or spiritual/nonphysical and non mental energy. The more knowledgeable a person becomes, the more aspects of Ki the person will likely understand. Sugiyama in Chicago wrote an excellent book on the subject. It can be found at:

KI or chi is the spirit itself. One can master to harness this power if he is willing to do so. Its an energy found in all things in nature including animals and plants and trees.

Actually chi is a form of energy activated by strong emotions throughout he body.
Kung fu is the best known martial arts that focuses on chi energy.
if you watched ripleys belive it or not you will see a master use his chi to steam water.

It is internal energy that can be harnessed for power.

I would be careful with this though. There are many who go to a dangerous spiritual demotion with this.

I am a Christian martial artist. I practise Ki strikes but only to a point. Just be careful.

Nearly all martial art use "ki" (or "chi" in chinese), but some martial art have more focus in ki (like aikido and taichi). Aikido for example, we use attacker ki to defeat him. But, to be honest I still do not know what's ki is really about.

Usually it's spelled chi. It's a fictional energy that people can supposedly harness and use internally to heal, or strenghten themselves or project outside of themselves to attack someone.
It's been tested in labs with monks and there is no such thing as chi. Acupuncture is a placebo.

All chinese arts use it (kung fu, tai chi, etc...), I've never heard of any other country's art (Japan, Korea, etc...) using it.

I dont know how to explain it.. but mind and body working together. Try this exercise with another person. Have them stand still and then lift them up. Then, ask them to imagine their legs are filled with concrete as you rub the shins for a few seconds.. tell them to hold that image... then try to lift them up... you'll notice they are now heavy. I swear it works. Try it...thats Ki energy... the mind and body as one.
