I want to speed up my laptop performance . Where can I download decent free software ? I close programmes to stop them running in the background and defrag regularly. I´ve had it running quicker before and now it just seems to be slowing down again.

Un-install any programs you dont use and upgrade the amount of RAM you use i find that if a large amount of hard disk space is used a laptop will run slower and if it has a fan it will run constantly because the processor is always running at 100%

Have you checked for spyware? Try Spybot or Ad-Aware both are free. How much RAM do you have? is it slow ALL the time or is it slow only when performing certain tasks?

Have you upgraded to XP? (computers not designed for XP often don't run well using it)

Someone may have said this to you, but here goes....

I was told to remove all programs files etc from my desktop and put them away in my docs etc, I thought it sounded silly, but it worked.

Okay its a bit of a bind to go in through start menu every time, it's two clicks instead of one on your shortcuts, but it speeds you up no end.

Well, increasing RAM is a good place to start. I just upped my 512 MB to 1GB and it had a great effect on speed.
