SD cards are 2.8mm thick, MMC cards are 1.4mm thick, both cards have the same surface area.
SD cards haev a switch in which prevents transfer of data when locked. compared to MMC cards, SD cards also have the ability to come in a range of speeds.
MMC cards will fit into SD card slots but not vice versa

SD has the switch to stop it being written to. A friend of mine bought a new camera that had a SD slot instead of a MMC slot like the old one. She didn't know any better and plugged the MMC card in and it worked! So there can't be a whole lot of difference.
