Gently with a washcloth. Only on the outside.

if your child will stay still you can use a q-tip. just do not insert it into the ear canal. My 1 year old is fever still and I am able to do this for him. If your child has a clogged ear. There is a spray device that a doctor can use to unclog the wax if it gets built up.
mother of 2 and one on the way. I have also been in the medical field for 11 years.

Wash the outside with a wash cloth and warm water, if the child is complaining of pain, or you can see wax buildup (probably nothing to worry about, it will naturally cycle) see your child's doctor before you do ANYTHING yourself.
As a child, I got in the habbit of cleaning my own ears out with Q-tips, at the age of 9 or 10, I had an earache so bad I couldn't stand it - in fact I still remember the pain. My mom took me to the doctor, and they cleared the wax out of my outer ear canal. It hurt worse! I ended up in the ER (my parents NEVER took us to the doctor even, so just this shows the level of pain) and they had to extract the compact wax that I had been pushing down in my ears for years.
As an adult, (I love to do this) I lay on my side and put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in my ear. It's WAY cold, and tickles like mad (or itches), but breaks up your ear wax, and you can then just wipe off the outside of your ear with a towel.
Just whatever you do, keep in mind, ears are VERY sensative!
Good luck!

Never put anything in your ear bigger than your elbow - they say this so you do NOT clean the inside of the ear as is it is self-cleansing. That being said, I use a Qtip with baby oil to clean and moisturize around the outside of the ears as it gets flaky from time to time.

They make Q-tips with a little tip to go slightly into the ear but majority of the cotton won't fit into the ear canal so accidents won't happen. Otherwise a bulb like the baby "snot suckers" (clean) and warm water.

You dont clean them . Ears are self cleansing. If you see some wax coming out of his ears just wash them gently in the bath with a wash cloth.

I don't think you are supposed to put anything in their ears at this age...ie Q-tips...but we had some issues this summer with our pool so we used an eye dropper and put some alcohol in my son's ear, let it sit for a few seconds and then had him tip his head so it would drain out...I'm sure that would work for other yucky stuff in there.

Very carefully on the outside area with a q-tip if the child sits still. Or with a wet washcloth.

From inside? No. You don't. The mother nature takes care. From outside you can clean them using a muslin cloth.

Very carefully. Have him/her lay on your lap on their side and try dipping the q tip in peroxide first, it helps loosen the wax for easier removal. Good luck
