How much harder is it to type 'you' instead of 'u' or 'your' instead of 'ur'?
Maybe people think text speak is cool? Or is that 'cwl'?

I stand corrected, hoist with my own petard, as they say! I do indeed despair 'at', not 'of'!
Thanks for putting me in my place!

I know what you mean. My grammar and spelling are rather shocking though so who am I to talk?

What annoys me more is people judging you from your question.

Or answering when not reading the full question

Or been rude and stupid ignorant with answers but hey ho that's life.

The EBay Community pages is one forum that made me mad last week they are there to help you and the people on there are nasty, rude and no help at all. They don't even use their correct seller names such hypocrites.

Rant over have a good day.

I don't despair of it. It provides a number of purposes for me:
1) Something to laugh at.
2) If I'm feeling down, I read this stuff and think "at least I'm not him/her".
3) When used by some bigot, it makes it very easy to point out the person's stupidity in your answer and you get to score cheap points by belittling their semi-literacy. A bit sad, but it's better than the work I should be doing when I'm on here.

I agree that the poor spelling and grammar is annoying and shows a lack of basic intelligence, but on the other hand it's quite entertaining.

I agree. My own spelling is weak - my excuse is that I had a hippy for an English teacher! But there is a spell checker built into the interface - it only takes a couple of clicks!
Txt Speak really hacks me off. Abbreviations and contractions make sense if you are paying per letter, or using a non-standard keyboard, but otherwise it is just irritating and ignorant.
I am a lecturer, and some of my younger students actually hand in Assignments written like that!

I personally prefer the long version but when I use to transmit morse code, I looked for all the shortcuts I could find. The idea was to send the message or complete the thought using the least amount of characters sent and in the least amount of time. I would guess that is the same reasoning a lot or people use abbreviation in this arena.

I despair of the standard of spelling and grammar everywhere. But at least this site is not intended to set a standard for spelling and grammar, so the lack thereof is at least somewhat more acceptable than it might be elsewhere (like a local newspaper that can't be bothered to hire a copy editor).

Yes absolutely! However i'm one of the culprits. No nothing wrong with my spelling/grammar but i tend to type too quick and end up with 'teh' instead of 'the' and others.

I totally agree with you about 'txt' english. it makes me mad. I think it a most lazy practice. I really cannot see how standards in english can benefit from this new culture. I am not a psychic but i can safely suggest that, should this 'txt' culture go on ... We'll have all contributed to the death of our language. It is something we shouldn't be proud of either!

I don't despair at the standard of spelling and grammar on this site but I always try my best to maintain my own standards by ensuring that my grammars are correct and use the check spelling often.

I can tolerate the text abbreviations. What drives me insane is the actual grammar mistakes and the horrible spelling. People cannot even construct a correct sentence using proper grammar. Don't get me started on spelling or the improper use of words.

Call me old fashioned - actually, just call me old! Sometimes the spelling can be poor (especially when a spellchecker is provided) but the grammar in some of the responses is pitiful. But, what gets me most is some of the smart alec responses you get to what is clearly a genuine question - that really annoys me!

I fink its' terible an I am well dissapointed at how rubbish peepul are at spellin' an' stuff.

What about people who have learn English as a second language anyway? In a way they are cleverer than those of us who can only communicate in the one language. I just hope that when I move to Spain people don't ridicule me for not speaking perfect Spanish -Oh, wait, they won't, because it's just English people who think they are superior and everyone should speak the Queen's English (just like they do, innit?)
