Does anyone have any experience or information on Lyrica being used for Anxiety Disorder?

Pregabalin (Lyrica) is an anticonvulsant drug used for neuropathic pain, as an adjunct therapy for partial seizures, and in generalized anxiety disorder. It was designed as a more potent successor to gabapentin. Pregabalin is marketed by Pfizer under the trade name Lyrica.

It can be used for anxiety, but not recommended. In the U.S., it is considered to have dependence liability if misused, and is classified as a Schedule V drug.

Treatments for General anxiety disorder (GAD) include medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy. A combination of the two has proved the most effective in alleviating symptoms; medication alone may reduce some anxiety but will not eliminate it entirely.

SSRIs are commonly used to treat GAD. Examples include SSRIs such as sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), citalopram (Celexa), and escitalopram (Lexapro). Benzodiazepenes such as diazepam and alprazolam are sometimes used in the short-term in order to alleviate extreme cases of anxiety, but they are not safe for continuous use because of the high risk of dependency. Conversely, it is very safe for a person to be on an SSRI antidepressant for many years. The anti-anxiety drug buspirone (BuSpar) is sometimes used in addition to or instead of SSRIs in the treatment of GAD.

SSRIs work because both anxiety and depression are thought to be associated with the neurotransmitter serotonin; thus a great deal of people who experience depression also experience anxiety symptoms. When both disorders are diagnosed, this is called comorbidity. Other antidepressant drugs such as tricyclics and MAO inhibitors are not used in the treatment of GAD.

I recommend sertraline (Zoloft) or paroxetine (Paxil). Paroxetine has more FDA approved indications than other SSRIs. Paroxetine has a short half life and you can take drug holidays if develop any side effects. All SSRIs might cause sexual dysfunction in most of the men treated. So you may need drug holidays later.

I prefer the drug free route. Drugs have side affects. Have you tried cognitie therapy? It will cure you where drugs will only mask the symptoms and likely have undersirable side affects.
