rule of thumb, the smaller the breed the longer the lifespan. of course much of it has to do with care. quality food, exercise, regular vet care, including dental.

Yes, small dogs generally do live longer than the larger ones...but not the tiny dogs bred these days..they have a truckload of mostly unpreventable problems...It does depend on the care you give your dog-that's the most important part! I have a Lab/Hound mix still going strong at 15, hopefully for many more years..I just lost my tiny little Yorkie-she was 15...But I found her on the street at a few years old, so who knows what happened before I had her?

The general rule is that the smaller a dog is the longer it will live. It also depends on its breeding. You want to be sure to get a pup from a reputable breeder, especially if you are looking longevity. Quality of food and veterinary care also contribute to how long a dog may live.

A well cared for dog. Any dog that has regular visits to the vet. and is fed well, along with proper love and adequate exercise can live for a long time. Take care of your dog what ever kind it is.

usually smaller dogs, and more usual, smaller terrier breeds can live up to 20 years old and then some. my one dog, was a mixed terrier, and lived 23 years.... and she didnt even die herself, my father went to put her to sleep. RIP. any mid-size dog will usually live up to 12-14 years, on average.

not only does it depend on the breed, but the lifestyle. not to over worked or ran, but exersized within its limit. feed well, but not too much, visiting the vet frequently, and believe it or not, love. A dog that has loyalty, (and gets loyalty) for lack of better words, feels it should stick around longer, to protect and care for its human companion.

I heard that small breed dogs have a longer life expectancy than a larger breed. Be sure to get good care for your pet, take it to the vet yearly, and they can live many, many good years.

One that is well-loved, properly nourished, given the proper immunization, exercised and made to feel like it's a member of the family. That's just about any kind of dog. ;)

pedigrees tend to have more problems hence a shorter life span although smaller dogs live a gd bit longer. I would suggest mongrels have a longer life ahead of them.
Large dogs experience bad hip score problems and pedigrees have heart probs etc. My mongrel has outlived any pedigree I know of.
