Go for it! The biggest regret I have is never going to college.
Today's accounting graduates command a starting salary around $45,000 per year. By the time you graduate it should be around $50,000. There is a shortage of accountants and you shouldn't have a problem finding a job. I should know, I'm the office manager of a public accounting firm. Make sure you get the hours in so you can sit for the CPA exam. I'm sure you'll be well respected by your professors. Good luck!

Take pride that your trying to improve your life through education.
A person is never to old and to the people that put a time limit on education are the ones who are to lazy to go to class and improve.
If you have siblings they will take inspiration from you and finish their course. I'm 52 yrs old and have yet to stop learning. There is something new everyday. I studied to be a computer engineer but when I saw the need for contract managers I jumped ship when I was 38 and have been an accountant/consultant ever since. Stay the course look at the diploma in your dreams and earn it.

I am 37 and have almost finished a teaching degree .... I was not the oldest on the course but felt old surrounded by loads of fresh out of school youngsters (for a while anyway). However, what most of them lack is experience and you will find that you make friends - afterall you are all there for the same reason. I came away with new friends of all ages; hang on in there and GOOD LUCK!

At your age, this choice of career has greater prospects of success than some others, as a mature person acting as one's accountant would inspire greater confidence than some young "smart alec".

Be confident. Keep at it. Don't be shy. You are as much part of the college scenery as anyone else!! Do NOT compare yourself with the young ones. You are YOU.

Soon the college environment will begin to feel more comfortable, provided that you have the necessary talents for the course. That is really all that matters. At least keep at it til half term!!

This is written by someone who went back to college as a mature student. Although I was not quite as mature as you (!), others were older than you.

You are lucky to start again at your age, not too old to get a full career out of it afterwards. Enjoy.

51 might be too old for a job at the end of the road. The "principles of accounts" and computer bookkeeping skills could come in useful. I think this should be on the standard curriculum. If the politicians knew elementary accounts it would be a good thing. I have never detected any such skills in the local Councillors.

Stop being so self conscious about your age and get in there and do your thing! So what if you were 82 year old and trying to better yourself. Don't use your age as reason to give up. I wish that I could have the opportunity to go back to college. I would show those young ones a thing or two!

I smell success! Now get in there!

So, it will take 5 years at the most. You will still be 46, you may as well be an accountant. I just went back 2 years ago (I'm 34), to study the very same thing! Good luck!

I personally think it's great that you're starting something new and it may actually inspire others to do the same thing!
You have the advantage of having more experience in different fields- and think- who are they going to want when you become employable- you, because of the experience and life skills acquired.
Good luck and hope everything goes well! xxx
