Depends how much sand is in the timer. An egg timer has 3 minutes worth of sand and an hour glass has, well, an hours worth, or however many hours it claims to have. You can get a 3 hours timer, a 2 hour etc etc

Egg timer is based on the hour glass design, but the sand inside lasts the length it takes to cook an egg, the hour glass lasts an hour

The correct term is hour glass, because in the old days before clocks were invented and before they were so common, people would use hour glasses to tell how much time had passed; it took a full hour before all the sand fell completely from the top compartment to the bottom. In more recent years, smaller versions of these were developed so people could use them when cooking eggs; hence the term "egg timer".

Well the egg timer was developed from the hour glass, which took one hour for the sand to run through. A miniature version was then developed for use as an eggtimer. The Hour Glass was where we got the 'hour glass figure' from. So both are right and both did exist.

Egg timer. But I do agree with DealWithIt's answer. He looks a bit angry though.
But do you have an egg timer figure, or an hour glass one?

Generally an egg-timer is a battery/electronic timer used when cooking food, or similiar, and an hour-glass in the one with the hour-glass shape and the sand falls through the middle. it's got a set time depending on hour big it is. so depending on what yours looks like, changes what it's called.
