The belief in mermaids is not limited to a few countries, but there are tales from all over the world (in India, for instance, there are the Apsara, beautiful water nymphs). However, most of those tales were told by sailors who "saw" them on their long journeys. The idea of mermaids and mermen, the male equivalent, could be based on creatures from Greek and Babylonian mythology: Sirens and Tritons of the Greeks, and the fish gods, who were half human and half fish, from the Babylonians.
Hence, in my view there are
NO MERMAIDS IN REAL LIFE.

There is no concrete example of mermaids that I know of. But, the depths of the ocean have not been fully explored and there are many stories of mermaids. They may exist, but we don't know at this point. It is not possible to disprove their existence because you can't prove a negative.

Not the fairy-tale types, I think. But some babies are born with the 'Mermaid Syndrome" where their legs are fused together, giving the appearance of a mermaid's tail.

THE SAILORS WHO WERE ON LONG EXPLORATION OR FISHING EXPEDITIONS HAD TO COME UP WITH A GOOD EXCUSE......... Sailor Popeye Coyl was the first sailor to be caught ,"familiarizing himself" with a Tuna that he caught of of the coast of Newfoundland...........he crowned the tuna with a mophead and had his way with the "catch " for days and with pinpoint accuracy.......He finally disengaged himself when young Jessica Simpson asked him "Is that chicken of the sea ?" The sailor was last seen surfing Big Kahuna Island.........

We of the Sea are Sirens...descendents from the Lost tribe of Atlantis we are changlings and can appear as human. We birth are children in the warm ocean currents and swim with dolphins and larger cetaceans. Our songs are chants: beckonings and warnings. Smiw...Come to me...
