Is a VW Beetle of this age likely to run okay? I mean, generally is it not unheard of for a 36 year old Beetle to actually work?

I realise one can't predict the performance of an old car but I just wanted to know generally what YahooAnswers respondents think.
Thanks!

I'm not sure how weather has anything to do with it, but I've noticed particularly in Northern California that people still drive the old version of the Beetle. In fact, I have the new version, and I think they built the old one to last much longer. If you see one you want to buy, then ask whomever the seller is if you can take it to a bodyshop to get an analysis of how good the car is running. Most people/dealers won't object to this. If they do, then maybe you should try somewhere else. Good luck! These are fun to drive and very good gas mileage.

They were great little cars, have had several, from 1968 up to a 1973. As long as the body is in good shape, make a complete inspection, specially the floor-boards, and the heater "tunnels", then is good to go. Engine swap in these for someone that has done before, can be done in about an hour, very easy, have done them a couple times. @ 3k, don't think your going to buy and resell for profit, as a keeper, then is not to bad, of coarse depending on the overall condition.

If it is just a collector car, to keep in the garage and drive on Sundays, ok, but not to drive regularly to work, or on highways, it is a 35 year old car, and the techonology is from the 40's. It is not safe or confortable. I would let a dear friend or relative ride in one for serious or everyday driving.

come on. get something more modern. with air bags catalyic converters, power steering, power brakes, dual piston master cylinders, ABS and most important HEATER controls. that car is slow and will get you no where on a CA highway. i like the car but it should be in a museum. not driven everyday. buy an investment not an antique.
