Irritiable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is not one illness but many and several. Therefore it is dangerous to get generic advice like this because what works for one person won't work for another because they will have a completely different set of symptoms.

Talk to your pharmacist and they will be able to advise you - don't be embarrased about it. Pharmacists are trained professionals and many have private rooms so you can talk to them without the whole shop overhearing your conversation.

There are three types of medicines - and two of them come under "over the counter".

There are prescription only medicines - where you need a doctor's prescription.

There are general medicines (asprins, etc) - where you can buy them pretty much anywhere

Then there are a third type (I don't know the name) - but these can only be dispensed by a Chemist.

So talk to your pharmacist. He will be able to give yo something stronger than you can pick up off the shelves; but weaker than you can get from your GP.

Irratable bowel syndrome is a condition like an allergy.
Curtian foods are thought to cause a reaction with the body in a way that would lead to diahorria, stomach ache and so on.

The best way to treat IBS is to ensure that you do need eat such foods.
The offending foods are the foods that contain a chemical you have an adverse reaction to and such chemicals include...
Gluten
Lactose
and other chemicals that are related to IBS.

The existance of IBS is a controversial issue since there is no way to scientifically prove it. Some people claim that your suffering from anxiety neurosis; however it is still worth trying treatment to rule out if there is anything wrong.

You should ask your doctor about this. If they do not take any notice, you will need to seek a second opinion. Failing that, I would research ways to aviod offending foods, but do not try to take medicines your-self since this could be dangerous for a variety of reasons.
