Sure they can.

1 Corinthians 7
10 But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband
11 (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife.
12 But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her.
13 And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away.
14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.
15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.

Even though God would rather there not be divorce, there are times when two people just cannot be together anymore. How can there be peace in a home if the married couple hold different beliefs? Sometimes to keep the peace, a divorce must happen.

'...What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.' : That is what Matthew (19:6) has claimed to be Jesus Christ's opinion, on marriage.
The Catholic Christian Church rates this opinion, as a ban. As such, a divorce [or rather, an annulment] between a Catholic couple is permissible only under extreme circumstances - and that too, only after a Canonic approval is obtained. For details, please see :

....With other sects of Christians, they need not approach their Church, and can seek a legal termination of their marriage.

Mathew 5:31-32 Jesus HImself says that you can divorce. But the issue of remarriage is tricky. If you divorce for reasons other than adultery, then you cannot remarry for you would then be committing adultery - a sin for which the only reward if hell. (It says so just a couple verse before this one).

the bible does allow for divorce but it also says that anyone who marries a divorced person is an adulteror so take your pick. basically the bible is a book of contradictions within its self.

Should not divorce unless abuse is prevalent. Always try to work it our either together or by a counselor. The splitting of the family unit is not God's idea or plan.

Some Christians (Catholics, for example) believe that divorce is wrong. Of course, they then replace it with annulment, which is essentially the same thing.
