Here is the joke i do not understand...
What is the usual composition of a typical Dogon family?
Mother, father, two children and a French Anthropologist!
perhaps i am not laughing because i am unsure of the meaning of the word "Dogon"
& also the precise meaning of the word "anthrapologist"

The joke is that anthropoligists are incessantly poking around at indigenous tribes like the Dogon, so much so that they become part of family life. Like many jokes, it's pretty close to being true.

The Dogon (from Wikipedia) are a group of people living in the central plateau region of Mali, south of the Niger bend near the city of Bandiagara in the Mopti region. They number about 300,000. The Dogon are best known for their mythology, their mask dances, wooden sculpture and their architecture. The past century has seen significant changes in the social organization, material culture and beliefs of the Dogon, partly because Dogon country is one of Mali's major tourist attractions.
An anthropologist is: (in my own words) someone who studies ancient humanity.
In other words, the reason why the joke is (supposed to be) funny, is because so many people have suddenly discovered the Dogon people and their history.
For the record, I don't think it's all that funny either.
