And how do you deal with it? I get depressed about humaity once in a while.

My last situation was when a doctor treated me rudely with arrogance just because I had a common medical problem, but not common to me, and I needed answers. This person wasn't the first I experienced, and I've heard others including my wife complain about some rude doctors.

I felt dissapointed because I thought doctors were suppose to be mature, empathetic, as well as smart in their field. In society, they're usually considered very important and intelligent. For some reason, I thought maturity and humbleness was apart of that. I was wrong. I felt irritated for weeks worrying about how I'm suppose to trust doctors when many don't care and will not inform you, and many times leave you in the dark. I felt trapped and decieved by what I thought doctors were usually suppose to be like.

But thats just my last situation. I want to read what some of YOUR reasons for depression are? Just wondering.

sista! - Good stuff. I do disagree with two of your points though. One is assuming something serious is going on with your if you have negative and pessimistic thoughts. I think you must see both the negative and the positive in matters to learn and truly understand a problem. Just seeing the positive side is as blind as seeing just the negative side. If you, however, are only and always seeing just the negative, I think then something is wrong. Maybe thats what you meant.

Secondly, you mentioned one must accept things that happened, there is no "why". I disagree. I, for example, get over a depressing situation by understanding the "why", in order to learn more about the tough situation. WIthout understanding why something unfair happened to you, your avoiding understanding the problem, and when it happenes again, you may get irritated by it again and again. To me, once you understand it clearly, the irritation is subdued greatly.

Just my opinion.

Netta - Wow, I'm sorry that happened to you. I went through a series of tough events one after another like you, and there were times when I felt like strangling those who caused those sitruations to happen to me. I one day decided to write a story about life, humanity, and the unfairness I've experienced, but is an interesting way for the story. I'm almost done and ready to seel the first book. Writing out my irritations on paper/computer has helped me dramatically. This way, I can solve many irritations I have by figuring it all out on paper with characters I create, and in the end, knowing that otehr people who read the stories connect with it because they've experienced the same of similar life struggles.

It's fun.

I get depressed when I can't figure out how to solve a life problem.. the bigger the problem the worse the depression.

I have been very depressed thinking I had lost my partner, and then my mind wondered into a bleak future. Woe is me, what do I have to look forward to in life etc.. I have been very depressed at failing in my career, being homeless, not having any children etc etc.

I was put on to some low grade anti-depressants for a while which didn't help at all in fact some of them made me feel worse!!

I finally tried lexapro which totally snapped me out of it and made a huge difference.

I think our minds can be 'trained' to take on negative or positive outlook. Anti-depressants can help to get your mind thinking in the positive instead of the negative, that's what I like about them.

Depression can be very debilitating since it immobilizes you. Right now I am fairly down over some life problems but have a plan in mind for positive change. :)

I figure, if I address the causes of my depression, that will solve the problem. Why would I be depressed if things in life were going OK.?

Well the last year of my life has been like a country song. Last November my brother committed suicide, then in December I lost my job, January I lost my happy home and my boyfriend, and on Super Bowl Sunday my truck caught on fire. I lost my mind for a bit, made some bad choices and ended up in jail for two months. So yeah, I know what depression is. I've gone to support groups and I now have a doctor who prescribes some medication. Depression can be dangerous because sometimes you're not rational and that's what contributed to my very bad decision making that landed me in jail. Get help, if you feel it's bad.

I get that a lot. It has somethng to do with not being able to vent anger, so I turn angry against myself, which is how depression works. You ask what I do to alleviate it. First of all, this has to do with stress. The best way to cure that is sleep long, frequent sleep. Sleep whenever you can. And then there is humour - if you can find something which really, really makes you laugh like crazy for a long time, you've found a good way out. There are movies like that, and comedians on CD, but also websites. Good luck to you.

look for changes. the more changes and the more severe these are, the more likely thereis something serious going on.
- thought changes, such as negative & pessimistic thoughts
-body changes, like insomnia, loss of weight, lack of energy
-behavioral changes, social withdrawal, oblivious to the surroundings & usual interests. for those with a faith, changes in one's spiritual values may be the cause.
- stress factors, relationship problem, work/ study problem, or recent loss.

if you have 3 or more of these symptoms, it is time to see a family doctor, who may or may not refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist for further treatment.

the commonest treatment for depression is either by medication or counselling (psychotheraphy). the current trend is to use the newer antidepressants that are safer & fewer side effects. the good news is that depression can be treated effectively in most cases.
