a cyclone wiped out pretty much the entire area that supplies 90% of australias locally grown bananas. The government has since put a ban on all banana imports to stop foriegn suppliers taking a monopoly over australias banana industry. Few local banana + no imported bananas = high prices

There's a lot of possibilities. Probably the land in Australia cannot grow bananas on its own, so they imported the bananas from another country and that makes the price as high as it possible. The same thing happens in Japan where watermelon is the most expensive fruit in that country. A single slice for about an inch can cost around 200 Yen. This happens because the same situation applies. The land in Japan can't grow good watermelons to be sold, so they imported it from all over the world.

There is currently a critical shortage of bananas in Australia. Therefore, the price goes through the roof.

We had a massive cyclone that tore down most of our banana trees, so we have little supply and many people (the ones that still have bananas) are either cashing in on that, or trying to rebuild their plantations. Bananas are these days considered a rich man's fruit.

Well, first of all, most of the harvested bananas are in South America, thats a looong way to ship them. The harvest has been ruined by huuricanes. On the Aussie side of the world, cyclones Tsunamis and drought have ruined the crops. That would be my guess why they are so expensive.
