Ok, that's really two questions for the price of one.
A-How long at night do the lights stay on?
and
B-What time of night do the crowds start to really thin out? Will it still be crowded around 11 pm?

(I'm trying to determine if it will be safe to walk back to 57th at that time of night with kids or if we'll need to grab a cab.)

I wouldn't advise a 15 block walk with tired cranky kids at 11:00 pm, but it's perfectly safe.

The only time the lights go out is during a blackout.

They stay on ALL NIGHT! It is safe at any time of night to walk from Time's Square to 57th street... they are well-visited areas at all times and there are police and it's VERY safe. The crowds thin at maybe 1am... or later... there are ALWAYS people there though, you'll never find a time when it is empty.

the 'lights' are on all the time. They are signs.
This is the city that never sleeps, remember?
There certainly will be less people in times sq at 11. It wont be empty.
If its wends theres the theatre matientee and there would probably be more tourists.

Honest, its safe, there are always people on the street. I have not hear of someone being mugged in Manhattan in decades. 11pm is not late in NYC. Even at 2am its perfectly safe and the area has people, restuarants and hotoes, all open.

NYC has the lowest crime rate of any major city.
