We just rented a flat in Ma'adi, Cairo. Our oven dial doesn't list temperature settings, just 1 to 8. I've burned a couple of things already. Other than the obvious, go get an oven thermometer, anybody got a clue how to use this thing?

1. Buy an oven thermometer and put it inside the oven
2. Turn the oven on to #1, let it preheat, and then peak in to see what temp it is. Mark a little chart/card somewhere for a guide.
3. Do the same with the rest of the numbers.

you can go to a hardware store and buy a thermometer (that stands up on your oven shelf)...is that the obvious?

I'd say you need a recipe with anything you bake, and open the oven PRECISELY when the recipe tells you it should be done---until you get the thermometer.

either ask your neighbors for help or experiment a little bit with middle level temperatures (4,5,6) and see what happens.. however in that second case you need to keep an eye on what's going on throughout the baking process
