i was at nyc 2 weeks ago. seriously the subway there arent as bad as people describe it. my cousin told me that if you take a spatula and grind the floor with it ill get chunks of dirt. but when i got there the floor wasnt any different than the streets. however, it was hard getting from say chinatown to queens. you gotta know where to get off on one subway and get on another. you're gonna be walking allotttt and see celebrities once in a while. haha while i was there i saw lucy lu. and when i was there, i rode on two different types of subway. there was one higher than the other and it was really nice with ac like a bus. and the other was down below and was musty but still enjoyable. NOT AS BAD AS YOU THINK..dont get second thoughs just cuz of subway. it is a rich place to live though...cigarettes were like 7 bucks

During the day, the Manhattan subway is fine as long as there are lots of people around. Stay away from the edge and pretend like you belong there. At night, I would not recommend it for groups smaller than 4-5 people. The subway is under constant video surveillance, but that won't help if you are wearing an iPod and holding $100 bills in your hand. Be careful.

People who have been around NYC for a while say it's like disney compared to the 80's. I live at the end of a somewhat rough line (but a nice neighborhood.) I've gone home after midnight and never seen anything to scare me. If you live in Manhattan, you may never leave the busy areas. It's the more deserted areas that you should worry about. Just be safe and use your best judgement. (Don't go alone when it's late; Know where the video screens are; Know where the conductor is; Watch for anything that scares you and leave; Watch your belongings) Many people in NYC walk as their primary transportation because everything they need is in their neighborhood.

I am from California, and have been to NYC on several occasions. The subways can be a little scary, but if you know where you are going, you should be okay. Be sure to plan your trip. It is an adventure. Lots of interesting people, but the subway or cab is the only way to get around in NYC. Have fun!

Actually, there could be more subway cops...
But, if you don't pee on the third rail, walk on the tracks, you will be pretty safe! Yeah, traveling alone for a woman can be a bit intimidating.
Don't go out when you will be forced to travel late at night...?
Get a man in your life?

VERY dangerous. you are safer to travel during busy times of the day or w/ a friend- & dont ever ask anyone questions about your travels- only ask security people. & dont let people see you traveling w/ a map or subway schedule; dont take out money in front of people either.

Deadly. 75% of passengers don't make it. Per trip.
Seriously, should generally be OK during daylight hours. There are also taxis if it's late and you don't want the subway.
