depends on household size, yard size, etc.
high energy children + lazy tired boring dog= can be not so fun and a waste of time and money.
High energy dog + low unenthusiastic children= not so fun and a very neurotic dog
For a high energy dog, I would say a Siberian husky. but they're not for everyone. They need to be challenged (i.e. trained)or played with or they will get bored and will try to escape house/yard. they are known to be excellent escape artists as well as one of the most intelligent dog breeds. they also need LOTS of excercise and should be run/walked everyday. (which is not so good if you are a busy working person).
Huskies are VERY friendly social dogs and mine have never bitten anyone and love kids.
Big plus: Siberian Huskies are GORGEOUS dogs!
big minus: they shed all year long
As for low energy dogs, I have no idea. probably just an older dog in general, maybe not a husky. my husky is almost 10 and she's (almost) as energetic as ever.
I know a lady with 5 golden retrievers. Though they are very beautiful, they are QUITE a handful. even the oldest one who is i think 12. They are very loveable though, and can be good guard dogs. Great with kids. But high maintenance! they eat a lot of food and are very hairy and need regular grooming.
Good luck finding the perfect dog!

OKAY, okay. most EVERYONE will mention the dog they have. but here are some tips.
1. always get a puppy first. so it can grow while always being around kids., and get used to the mannerisms of the children.
2. I do not recommend many large dogs, but, although I am not fond myself of Labradors, they are very good with children. I also Do not recommend very small dogs, like toy poodles, toy chihuahuas... if you have small children, they may easily hurt the dogs, and these dog types have nervous conditions, that may show more with children.
3 stay away from the moody, temperamental dogs, for example, pit bulls, boxers, and believe it or not, Dalmatians. they are WELL know for having zero tolerance for children, and quick to snap. these three dogs are usually best if you have much older children and adults living in the house. some even say collies can be snappy as well. these dogs are 'working' dogs, and have to be ran, and exersized on a DAILY basis. this, fo the most part is why they get moody, they are pent up inside all day. the same goes for Jack Russells, although a very small dog breed.
4.I DO recommend, however, middle sized mixed breeds, terrier/hounds, or just mixed terriers. Mutts are usually always good natured. beagle mixes are good as well. medium sized terrier types are loyal, will protect your children, and be a great companion. If your looking for a well natured, BIGGER looking dog, most bulldogs are evenly tempered, although they may look mean :)

I think depends on how old is your children and how much area you can let the dog run, also how much time you can spend with your pet dog each day?
Also it is a big commitment. You have to train them. You have to take them to the vet. The bigger size you get, more money you have to spend for food and medication.
You may talk to some breeder before you buy one. You can go to find some web site which can tell you more about dog temperament.
I have a French pug and a golden retriever. They both are good for my children.
Go to the breed info.

It does depend on the age of your children. If they are small you don't want a large dog, but that doesn't mean you can't have a mid-size dog such as a Shetland Sheep Dog - very good with kids and require a lot of exercise. Golden Retrievers are very gentle for the larger breeds. Whatever you decide, just set the rules for your children on how to treat and take care of the dog. Have fun and best wishes.

Miniature schnauzer, miniature dachshund, boston terrier or jack russel terrier. All of these are pretty strong, even though small, and are usually gentle with children. You have to also train children to be gentle with the puppy because if the child is rough with the dog, the dog will get defensive-that's with almost any dog. I have been around all the dogs I listed and they all seem to be calm around children. Another key to this is making sure the puppy is well socialized.

Labs are great, especially if they get a lot of attention and running time.
Yorkies tend to be a 1 person dog.
Bernese Mt Dogs are huge and they shed all summer..but Ive never seen a better dog for kids. They never EVER bite or growl. They are happy to see the kids, never a one person dog. They never tire of attention from anyone.

Labs are great pets.
You could also try out breeds like ****-a-poos or Westies, smaller dogs with good dispositions, or dogs like Standard Poodles (often overlooked by people who associate them with with wealth and silliness) but lovely, even-tempered pets that don't love a ton of exercise.
New breeds of "designer" dogs, mixes of Labs and Poodles, Retrievers and Poodles (Lab-A-Doodles) are great family dogs and can often be calm. A good breeder will also help choose a mellow dog that is good with people from a litter

it depends on the household and activity level of the family.
I'd suggest a great pyrenees if you have the room and don't mind shedding. Not only are the great with kids they are also great protection. Great Pyrenees were bred to protect flocks at night. Normally as puppies they are raised with the stock they are going to be protecting and it becomes their family or pack. This translates into familial life very similarly. If they are raised with a family it becomes their pack and they will protect it with their lifes. They are however naturally suspicious of new people. If the owner introduces them to a new person they warm up right away. if it's a stranger the watch them to make sure they don't attack their family.

It depends on the size of the house and the space around you are staying .With Children i have seen Labradors make a good pet when raised from a puppy stage. They are friendly and mild tempered and with good intelligence. Will be a good companion for the whole family. After all you are the one who will have to look after it.
