I quit by knowledge. What I mean is, I learned that the chemical addiction is only really effective for about four days. The rest is habitual behavior patterns. I have to say the exception to this is when using alcohol. With the first drink, it was as if I'd only quit the day before even though I hadn't smoked in over 2 years.
As it happens, I like smoking. I quit for my health and was supported by changing my environment. I started going to church and it was frowned upon in those circles. After over 10 years of not smoking, when I moved away from the area where I'd been going to church and started searching for a new church, I started smoking again when I got frustrated in my church search.
The behavior patterns never go away, you just have to replace them with new ones. The withdrawals are easy, its the behavior patterns that are hard to beat.

I quit a year ago and hate the smell of it. I read a great book by Allen Carr called the Easy Way to Quit Smoking. It made the process easier because I was ready to quit but couldn't believe I could without the gum or the patch. If you're thinking about it find a copy and then decide.. Good luck to you!

It took me a resentment against my health-freak boss, a case of the flu and a Thanksgiving weekend out-of-town at a nonsmoker's house (with snow, sleet and 20-degree temperatures) to initially quit smoking.
It took me a heart attack 19 years later for my cravings to go away.
I agree with the "not quitting everything at once" strategy; I was nearly 2 years sober when I quit smoking, and the smoking was a lot tougher than drinking & drugging put together, but
IT CAN BE DONE ! ! ! ! !
just hang in there & good luck !

What you need is to develope some coping strategies that aren't crutches. I know you won't want to hear this, but counseling is an excellent way to do this. The chances of you cutting your life short by YEARS is almost a sure thing. The chances of you SUFFERING from painful and debilitating diseases during your lifetime, or DROPPING DEAD are also probable. Don't let it win. At the preschool I teach at, we teach the kids self control by having them push their wiggles from their heads down to their toes, and then catching them. They then roll them up, smash them flat, pick them up, and blow them away. The message is that they are STRONG and don't allow their body to do what IT wants. It does what THEY say. You can do the same. You CAN do this!! Decide on it, then follow through. It will be the BEST thing you'll ever do for your health, future children, and loved ones. Good luck!

I went cold turkey 4 years ago after trying everything. Cold turkey is best if you can make it through the first week or so. The nic addiction goes away after a week and it gets way easier after that. The first week is hell though. The site below helped me a lot back then. Good luck. You can do it.

well I think that you should take it slow and one day at a time because, you can use some form of a support group to help you, or meetings. But all in all you will power to want to quit has to be strong and your self determination has to be high.
