As a minister, I can tell you that often times some people are (shall we say) a bit overzealous in their approach to helping people, and it scares them crapless. However, there are some cases where it may be a necessary means to an end.

In the case of depression, however, as a psychologist I can tell you that while what some people suffer from is self induced and short lived, many more actually suffer from some form of clinical depression which may require professional attention. I am not an advocate of medication in all cases, but I recognize that it may occasionally be necessary.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that a lot of what we experience has little to do with our bodies... but our minds/spirits play a huge role in our physiological health and so whether a person is Christian or not, there is room for exploration of causes outside of traditional medical practice which may help someone... regardless of their religious affiliations.

Incidentally... a good Christian should be able to help a person feel better about themselves without resorting to any type of language that would make a person feel "lower" than before... unless of course by lower you mean explaining that their lives could be better by changing some of their habits.

An old friend once told me "The best definition of insanity is trying to do the same thing the same way over and over, but expecting different results."

Yeh! Religion is an OPIUM PILL! Whenever people get depressed or having any psychological problem, they try to find the solution in religion. The root cause of depression is thinking over a spilt milk again & again and doing nothing positive about it or may be just plain Exhaustion! If certain "MARITAL " DEMANDS ARE NOT MET BY THE OTHER PARTNER , ONE RECIPROCATES NEGATIVELY & BOTH GET DEPRSSED . Rather than seeking solution from Religion, they should go for vacation & explore each other in new atmosphere, fully! Otherwise they will land up in much depressed state! If the mind is stormy, only then religion is of help!

I think that now, more than ever, with Tsunami's and Hurricane Katrina, and people killing themselves and countless others in the so called name of their idol god, Man's time is close. I do agree that some people do go overboard, with the fear tactics, but there actually is a way to do it to actually make the person feel better. Basically, most people that are depressed, are looking for someone to tell their troubles to. Then you can just let them know what works for you, to pull you out of depression. Some people that scream and preach fire and brimstone, forget to let others know that there is a way to avoid all of that. This is possibly due to their own fears about if they are in the right religion, things in my religion don't make sense, the fear of questioning their own faith. Truth is, no one will know who "got it right", until judgement day. We can only pray ourselves, and hope for better days in heaven, or we can stay depressed with the way things are going in the world today. For Christians,The majority of them strive daily to build a personal relationship with Christ, and try to live by the example that He left for us to follow. It's really the greatest love story ever told, but it loses something when someone is beating you over the head with the book.

Religion relies on ignorance and fear. For example - depression is a very real dis-ease that has it roots in brain chemistry. It can be cured with medication and therapy. It has nothing to do with "spirit". However, as is usual, xtians must throw god into the mix, make others feel lower than themselves, continue ignorant myth telling and provide nothing of value to the person they are trying to "help". Xtians have everything tied up in neat little packages that unravel quickly under the light of reason. I'm sorry that your friends were further hurt by supposed well intentioned xtians. They are a harmful lot.

Always. There are always people for whom religion supercedes reality...and actually believe that is a good thing. Taken to its extreme, these people can be deadly. Jim Jones, David Koresh, Heaven's Gate, and many others are perfect examples of religion gone much too far. The deaths connected to Scientology would also fall into that catagory, along with the people who have been killed in the process of "exorcisms".

Some people do go to far with religion (see: anytime anyone was killed in the name of religion). It sounds like whomever saying that a person is depressed because of their "soul" is not invested in any way in anyone else but themselves. They lack any sense of empathy, and seem to be saying whatever they would like to in order to resolve an immensely complex issue as quickly and subjectively as possible. If someone else is in pain and depressed, just casting them off as having a problem with their soul is selfish and unthinking.

Arguments about religions will never get anyone anywhere. Religions are of the Devil - each and every one of them - Not the individuals in persé, but the religious systems

The people are only blinded by traditions of the forefathers and because of that they cannot substantiate their arguments with facts. They have heard a noise, but don`t know who blew the whistle, I would say ...

Faith is a substance and if you have not met That Substance yet, you will never know where you are going - You are only probing in the dark.

One Word off the Truth (God`s Word) and you are anti-Christ - doesn`t matter who you are ..
The question is "Where is the Truth"? since all religions have the Bible screwed up with their own interpretation - that`s the reason they fight each other - total confusion in darkness.

Don`t you people think this world needs a Prophet from God to restore all things back to what it was before sin came in ... God is only restoring His own children after all ... the rest will determine their own destruction by following their own mindsets, which is of their father the devil.

Christianity is not a religion - It`s a Life in Christ - separated from sin (religion, paganism, atheism, etc)
Christians live by the power of Faith. The Power of Faith is God Himself living in you. That was the purpose of His death afterall - After His resurection, He promised to return...
He is still available - only to those who desire His Presence in them.

The spirit of a dog will make you act like a dog and similarly the Spirit of God will make you act like Christ - to be known as a son of God

Therefore my friends - Repent or perish - Turn away from your own devilish knowledge and desire the Spirit of Christ in order to act like a Christian .

The end result will be no debating anymore, but rather the Glorification of The ONE who is Whorthy - Jesus Christ (your identification)

Absolutely! Some fanatics do these types of things to people that have a low self-esteem, only to make them feel lower that they were feeling before. They make them feel helpless and hopeless. Cults do this to weak people to get them involved in their "supposed" religious ways. They prey on their weaknesses. Sad, but true.

Yes. I'm a religious person and at one time in my life I was trying so hard to be good I was comparing myself to other ppl around me and becoming critical and depressed to the point where I went to a therapist.
It helped a lot. You know, even Jesus took time to be by Himself. We are only human and we make mistakes.
You have to be at a good place with yourself, love yourself even your mistakes. Afterall, a mistake is only an opportunity to learn something.
And , btw God made us and God doesnt make mistakes, right?
Oh Yeah, I forgot to mention I also take zoloft. (smile, wink)
