Where do you recommend eating? Are there any landmark restaurants? What about good Italian?
Also good scenic hikes?
And what are the MUST DOs?

I heartily second the suggestions for Powells - a city of books! http://www.powells.com/

McMennamins http://www.mcmenamins.com/

The Grotto http://www.thegrotto.org/

Oregon Zoo and Washington Park - great hikes here too

If it's rainy, absolutely grab your raincoat and visit the Japanese Garden http://www.japanesegarden.com/

A little drive down the gorge is the Columbia River Highway and Multnomah Falls http://trips.stateoforegon.com/multnomah_falls/ Good hiking here.

It's a fun city that's relatively easy to get around in. Have a great time!

This place is awesome! Right outside of Portland, Oregon near the gorge so you can have lunch and go wine tasting there and then hit multnomah falls which is near by, followed by a drive through the Columbia River Scenic Hwy and see all the waterfalls! it's beautiful and romantic.

if it's not for a romantic weekend, skip the wine and check out the microbrews they make. I suggest Ruby Red!!! Or you can always head up to Mt. Hood and go snowboarding??

I can't tell you the best Italian, when I lived there I was a college student with no money! HA...However....Go to the Grotto!!! Just a pretty place, and it is free. Also go to Multanomah Falls! Great hike and beautiful waterfalls! There is a cool coffee shop that is downtown called Anna Bananas! I used to love to go there. You have to go to the Farmers Market, it is a MUST! Washington Square is good too...they are close enough to do both!

I really like McMenamins Kennedy School as a neat place to get food. McMenamins is a local chain of brewpub known for taking interesting buildings and repurposing them as restaurants. Kennedy School used to be an elementary school.

But there are tons of great restaurants in Portland, you wont have trouble finding great places to eat.

Washington Park is a great place to hike actually in Portland. We have a gorgeous Japanese Garden within Washington Park.

One MUST Do is Powells bookstore on Burnside. It's a three story bookstore that also has lots of great events like talks and sgnings. Check http://powells.com/ to see if they have an even you'd like to see while here. Last time I had a friend in town he found out too late one of his favorite authors was speaking at Powells while he was here.

There isn't much in the downtown part of Portland. Alot of character of Portland is in the neighborhoods like Hawthorne and Alberta, conventiently names for the streets they are on.

Have a great trip..

I was up there a couple weeks ago and we found this little restaurant called Veritable Quandary, it's 1220 SW First Ave. We went there for dessert after a show and then brunch the next morning. The tirramissu (sp?) was absolutely amazing, the brunch was incredible. I was totally impressed. You should definitely check them out. They are near the Marriott Hotel which has an amazing restaurant as well, we had dinner there and it was soooo good!!

Just went to Porland, OR recently. Visited the Pearl District in downtown Portland. I saw alot of homeless and art students who looked like homeless. I've seen better cities.
