Has ADD made your life so awful you won't have a child if the risk is too high? I'm ADHD, and I believe my husband is, too, though he's never been diagnosed. We have a baby on the way and will love him regardless of his ADHD status. If I could go back to my conception date and God ask me if I wanted it or not, I'd say YES. There are downs to having ADHD, but there are benefits to it as well! I see it as a hurdle in life, but it isn't a wall! Hurdles can be overcome and we are better for them!
No one can be sure what the odds are, just that it is more likely. Worrying about it isn't going to change that.
And yes, ADD IS genetic. And there is NO reason to feel guilty taking a "risk" that your child will have ADD.

I am sorry but studies have found that ADD and ADHD are genetic disorders. It has to do with a chemical imbalance or chemical in the brain. My mother has ADHD as do I and my younger brother, a lot of my cousins have it. As for chances of a child getting they are quite high. Though my son is only 11 weeks old I can see the ADHD already (he is an EXTREMELY active 11 week old jumping up and down, bouncing, flailing his arm every second of waking)

well actually ADHD or ADD as it used to be known can be genetic i have ADHD and my 11 yr old son has it as well but my 13 yr old doesn't, i have a 20 month old daughter and a 9 month old daughter and the 9 month old is just like my 11 yr old was, its hard to explain but there are similarities but i will not know for sure till she's about 7 yrs old, my 11 yr old is very loving and i wouldn't change 1 thing about him, also ADHD is more common in girls (so the proffesional say) but all the people i know who av kids with it have boys so not too sure bout that 1

Since ADD is a behavioral problem and not a genetic one, there is no chance your baby will be diagnosed with the affliction. Just give your baby all the attention he/she needs and the child will develop just fine.

Speak with your doctor before you take the advise of responses received via "answers". My son is ADD, I am ADD, his brother is ADD and so is my husband. I have read that if one or both parents have ADD or ADHD their children have a greater chance of being ADD or ADHD, but this is not always true. Again, talk with your doctor.

It is not a hereditary condition. Although in my family I have a sister with it, and her son has it, her daughter doesnt. Then I have another sister who does not have it, but one of her children does...

Not too high but, high enough to take it into serious consideration. I'd feel guilty taking that risk.
