Did you wake up this morning? Have to un-plug yourself? Change your batteries? How do you really think you are here?

I am one out of billions who do believe in God - many people, unfortunately, do not - so I'll give it my best shot. I am confident that there will be more thorough answers.
As far as recognizing God, I have asked myself the same question... "God, if you exist, show me a 'sign' - prove to me you are real and exist on this earth." Did I get a physical response? No. Is the distant noise of a chirping bird a sign? Who knows? And today there are so many different dieties in which one can believe (Allah, Buddha, some cows are seen as sacred, Satan), you name it one can believe in it. And who is right in all this?
I sum up my belief in God by recognizing and appreciating our surroundings (however simple (trees) or complex (human body)) and how they arrived on this earth. Some thing or some being with a power beyond our imagination HAS to be behind all that we do. The way we think, believe, act, react to various stimuli.
It's really hard for me to believe that our universe just "happened." Simple physics dictates that one thing has to cause another thing to happen; so, to me, this puts the big-bang theory to rest. If two atoms collided, how did those atoms arrive at a particular time and space wherever they supposedly collided? Can two atoms collide and 'create,' through an explosion, the many intricacies of the earth or the human body? How did those two atoms collide at a point and time in space that isn't too close, nor too far, from the sun (lest we physically burn up?). One more mile or so toward or away from the sun - or a few more degrees this way or that with relation to the relative position of the earth on its axis - and the earth wouldn't survive (it would be too cold or too hot). But as it sits now, it's exactly where it needs to be positioned for this not to occur.
By the way, with our ever-increasing ventures into space, many leading astronomers are beginning to see more 'order' to our universe (a hint that some thing or some Being was definitely behind its development). With their high-powered telescopes, the farther they peer into space the more order they discover.
It all boils down to one's faith. You cannot see or touch God in a physical sense; but you can believe and have faith in a God that promotes peace, love and hope.
Short and sweet, I realize, but it's how I look at believing in a Supreme being.
Good luck on your responses.

God has given us all of our facilities so both faith and reason are useful in determining if God exist. In fact what the Baha'i Writings state is that every atom in the universe testifies to His existance:
"Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is a direct evidence of the revelation within it of the attributes and names of God, inasmuch as within every atom are enshrined the signs that bear eloquent testimony to the revelation of that Most Great Light. Methinks, but for the potency of that revelation, no being could ever exist."
- Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 177
Therefore, in many respects, just looking at the world around us given us much evidence about the existance of God. However, thankfully, God has decided to communicate with us directly as well through Messengers. By reading these Books we are able begin the path that God Himself has created to help us find Him.
Good luck on your path...

We exist because GOD exists to make us exist. Look at all the wonderful works of nature and think just how they all came to be and your mind will be opened to the reality that someone somewhere made all these. GOD, the architect and builder of the universe. The Bible will tell you all that you need to know about God and His greatness, goodness and love for us. Believe even without seeing and you will feel His presence in your life. Have faith....:-)

Depends on where you are in human history. If you lived a few hundred years ago, you have to smoke a lot of pot, then go sit in the mountains for a few days without any food or drink until you finally see god . . . yeah that makes a lot of sense.
If you lived a couple thousand years ago, you have to offer up a sacrifice (in extreme cases your son) and then an angel will come tell you thanks but it isn't necessary . . . yeah that makes a lot of sense.
Or now you can read the bible, kneel down in prayer, and ask for help and when it doesn't come trust that it is all in god's plan . . . yeah that makes a lot of sense.
Get my point??

Personally, I can't do that. It's just not in my makeup. I question things and need proof. My makeup simply doesn't include whatever it takes to have faith. And by faith, I mean religious faith.
I do have some degree of non-religious faith. For example, I have faith that if people apply themselves and work hard, they will be rewarded. For students, the reward would be better grades. And better grades would lead to better job opportunities, etc.
Also, I don't feel a need to try to convince anyone to think as I do. I sense it's possible that it would be just as hard for religious people to give up their religious beliefs as it would be for me to give up my non-religious beliefs. So, I live and let live.
My only wish is that our country remains strong enough to protect us from bad leaders in both government and religion. I wouldn't want to find myself under a Sadam Hussein type of regime nor under a Talliban type of religious control.
I really like the idea of freedom of choice.
