basically as soon as you can support yourself;
My 4 all moved out when they were 18/19 ; 2 actually moved away ;
as for "children" staying with their parents till their late 20's + ; do they give any thought to maybe the parents wanting their own space. In some cultures it is the done thing to continue living with parents. Really it is a matter of personal choice - some young people do NOT learn to be independant until they leave home ; also a lot of parents still do everything for their adults children living at home ( cooking;laundry etc)
having said all that though - I moved in with my then31y/o son about 18 months ago - & am still there - BUT we share the house as 2 adults- NOT ,mother & son

I am 24 and still live with my parents. That doesn't make me think that it is ok at all. I have had some hard knocks and am very fortunate that my parents have been there for me. I am involved with someone who I am pretty positive I will marry in the near future.
Really I think that the child should have a job as soon as it is ok to have a job, age-wise. Delivering newspapers, babysitting, mowing lawns, etc. I will raise my child to earn and save money for future expenses like a car. Hopefully my kids will go to college. They will always have a home, no matter what. I do expect them to do different and better than I did for myself.

Age does not have anything to do with Independence, is a responsibility factor, There are children 15 years of age who show more responsibility than some 18 year old. Move out when you can make it on your own. Does not include welfare.

I'd say no later than 23/24, that way if you have just finished college, you can get some time to get your stuff together. I went away to college, and only came home for breaks, but I moved out within month of college graduation, and wish I had stayed one more year to get my finances in order.

Hard to say.
I moved out at 17, joined the military, moved back at 24 (right before I started school) and am now contemplating moving back in (30, got downsized).
It's an expensive world out here. Stay as long as you can.

My children moved out when they were both 22 years old and can financially support themselves. No one is immune to having financial problems and I'm a very firm believer that if my children should ever endure financial problems, they are always welcome to move back home. No child should ever be so afraid of their parents to ask for help. If kids can't come back home in their time of need, where will they go?
