I know a lot of people addicted to heroin. Throughout the 90's there was a very high grade of heroin in australia which was very addictive and very cheap. For some reason the stigma of needle use dissappeared as a new needle exchange program came into place and it seemed everyone i knew was injecting drugs of every type. Those who were not addicted to heroin were addicted to amphetamines (speed). Now.. a decade later most of those people have lost jobs, everything they own, health has deteriorated and the effect of their addictions is so much more than a physical craving. It changes a persons life and those around them. I could write for pages and pages on the effects of addiction and what it does to the individual and the family of them. It is completely all consuming and the addict will go to any lengths to get a fix day after day, year after year. Addictions do not go away but an addict can learn to live a clean life with lots of work on a daily basis. It is a disease which is with the addict for life and requires constant work to not relapse. Relapse is part of recovery and it does happen. When someone has a true addiction rational thought does not come into play. They become incapable of making decisions that they think are right and most addicts do not enjoy their addiction. It is a very very hard thing to take control over as most addicts will admit that they enjoy their drug of choice but because of the legal position and price of illegal drugs, the lifestyle which accompanies drug addiction is one that is hard to maintain and one that is destructive in endless ways. Nobody other than the addict themselves can make the decision to get clean and stay clean. No amount of intervention or outside influence will keep an addict clean. It may help to put them on the road to recovery but only when the addict themselves wishes to put the hard daily work in, will they remain clean. Many people believe that it is just a matter of choice and disipline but without experiencing first hand the grip of an addiction, can a person truely understand what is involved. It is so much more than a choice. It is mental, physical and it changes the chemical balance and receptors in the brain. If you are addicted or have someone close to you that is addicted, my advice is to get as much information that you can get your hands on. There are thousands of places that offer free info and help.

I actually have a drug problem- I dont use right now, but the reason i say have is its an uphill battle for the rest of your life. Herion addiction sucks worse than anything i think becuse everyday when you wake up you have to fight a battle all alone. I used to be a pretty happy go lucky guy, but now most of the time i feel like i am missing something from my life. My music seems to help a lot, but it seems as though ive lost a lot of my creative edge since i stopped using. Universal cut me off financially until a complete a 6 month program to get my addiction under control. My parents just want to know what the did wrong. That is the hardest part, because they didnt do anything wrong. My doctor says i just have a larger brain capacity than most people. I think that is funny.

I grew up in a bad part of my town and came from an addictive family. I do know lots of people that are addicts. Myself being one. It's not drugs or alcohol that has my addiction, mine is sex. Yes it's litterally an addiction http://www.sexaddictionhelp.com/general.html i have never done anything taht would get me arrested such as children, i have more what they refer to as that i seek sex for the high much like crack users do, to easy pain to seek nurturing, most were abused that turn to addicts myself I wasn't but I was in a household that where I didn't have any siblings, my parents partied everyweekend so i went to my grandmothers every weekend and it just wasn't a loving place. Right now I've been in one of my worse phases due to a miscarriage from a carwreck. I am always smart though about it, I always use condoms (the condom busted how I got pregnant by my ex bf) and I reguarly get checked. My whole thing is an acceptance need. Sexual addiction is in my family also, my uncle and grandfather both are too.
However my best two friends are alcoholics they basically drink for the pain to go away.
Mine doesn't really affect my family but it does me and I'm in therapy for it too. My two friends well my female best friend her alcolism got her arrested for a dui, loss of respect of her family, she got divorsed, and she almost lost her kids as well.

I have to add something here...after reading some other comments, I realized something I heard a long tme ago, addicts are usually the ones with higher iq's or very creative artistically and sorts. Addicts are easily addicted because say an artist is going through a rough phase that they aren't creating...well they start filling the void with something else that makes the phase go by or brings the creativity back. People with higher IQ's they by chance have so much going on in their heads, stress of parents school ect that they may start doing pot or drinking to calm themselves down and it only escalates from there. Myself being in the last category with a IQ of 210~well into genius level.

I had an addiction, well I guess I kinda still do! It is hard. The stuff I did is sooo easy to get ahold of! A few people in my family, (cousins) still do.....I find it hard to refuse to do the stuff, Luckily me hubby is there to pull me away, cause I dont think I can refuse if he wasnt there...it sux! Big time! Also I recently was addicted to some pain meds! Hubby got me off them, yeah it's just and uphill battle and very very tough! I havent ruined my family, hope that doesnt ever happen! Hubby said If I ever get addicted to a narcotic again he will leave! Hopefully thats a boost that will help me, stay clean forever!

Be more specific, most people know someone who is an addiction or has their own addiction. What are you really trying to ask?

Yes, a family member. She isolated everyone, family and friends, because they won't enable her drug use. She lost her husband of 36 years because of it. She recently disowned her son and daughter(again). She goes around telling people that no one loves her. Nothing is ever her fault. All the other people are always the ones who're in the wrong.
How can someone with a genius IQ be so stupid?
I don't understand people like her. It's sad.

I'm addicted to the internet, lol. I am on it over 16 hours a day....It doesn't effect them at all, or me. I just leave my net on and take breaks though.
