There are a list of reasons that allow you to be excused. These include such things as age (I believe 65 or 70 and above), being handicapped or in a nursing care facility and a few other. Usually. these "excuses" appear on the summons you received. In many places, you can get one "pass" - call and let them know you will be on a trip or out of the country. But don't expect to get this "pass" more than once. If you fail to appear as required, a bench warrant for your arrest could be issued and you could spend up to 30 days in jail. What you can do is appear and answer questions in such a way that no one (prosecution or defense) will want you to serve. That way, you will have responded, but be released because you were not selected.

Well, I'm Aussie, so this may be useless, but in Australia if you fail to appear at jury duty you are served with an Infringement Summary Notice by the Court Bailiff and you have to pay a $200 fine within a 21 day period. You can have the fine revoked by a court if you provide a medical certificate or you could be granted compassionate leave if you provide evidence of a death in the family on the day you were supposed to appear.

If you don't show up they'll subpoena you and that could be embarrassing to say the least.

You can get off if travel to the court location is a hardship, or if you have a family hardship such as an illness. You can also be excused if you have prior knowledge of the case in question.

Courts are usually reasonable about excusing jurors who can't perform the duty.

Do show up at the appointed time and place unless it is impossible and then be prepared to present a good reason.

Effective? You need valid excuses to get out of jury duty. Work alone will not be enough, but if it is something that your livelyhood depends on, it can be used. Actually, it's easier to simply walk across the court and shout out "OMG you got arrested?"

You will be held in contempt of court, arrested and fined.
There are no "excuses" to get off jury duty. The only way you can honestly avoid jury duty is if you have a death, wedding, or some other planned event that cannot be changed or canceled, and that is even iffy. Just go and do your time. It's the Patriotic thing to do, and could be interesting.

The Cops / Marshal will come & arrest you if you do not appear for jury duty. Even if you are not selected for a jury, You must go when you get the notice. Unless you have the Qualifying exemptions listed on the notice.

You can be arrested, jailed and fined by a judge.

I've heard that if you postpone your jury duty to a week when theirs a holiday, like Thanksgiving, it's likely that you will show up and be dismissed quickly.

The nice judge sends out the nice sherriffs, or policemen, in the nice car with the pretty blue lights and neato paint job, and they put some pretty silver bracelets on your wrists (a matching pair), and guess what? You get to ride in the pretty car in the back just like a movie star. Then you get to meet the judge and explain to him why you didn't accept the invitation to his party, and he asks you to be his guest for a couple of nights, at his friends place, where you get your 3 hots and a cot (actually I think somebody told me it is now 2 hots and a peanut butter sandwich, but oh well, IT'S FREE!!!)
