Okay: let's say,
we all have freedom of sexual preference,
meaning,
it's okay to be gay
and it's still okay to be straight.
so,
can we have freedom of religion,
meaning,
it's okay to not be Christian,
and,
it's still okay to be Christian?
i know what you're thinking, *some* (okay a lot of) Christians are intollerent of non-Christians, liberalists, gays, etc. but not all. but aren't some (but not all!) of the latter intollerent of the former? i hear a lot of people comparmentalize Christians together, as though we are all alike. Watch what you say before you say we are all alike. Because all atheists are not alike. or democrats, or gays...
any thoughts?

What you're presenting is personal choice, which is something each of us has to make for himself or herself.
We are all free to choose the things we approve of or disapprove of. I would note that Jesus preached against hatred and taught us to love our enemies.
He didn't say we have to accept all behavior. Nor did he suggest we could ever be free of sin except through him.
Nobody will ever force you or anyone else to be a Christian. That's a matter of choice and action.
As a Christian I do not approve of homosexuality, however I do not hate gay people and can accept them as people and even as friends.

Far more think they are "christians" than actualy are. Only God Knows who are for shure... But... Only those Who come to God in TheWay He proscribes will receive His free gift of Salvation... Those become The Body of The Church of which Jesus The Christ is The Head.... And only those of The Church will enter Heaven...
unlike the others you mention there is an eliment of choise in that they can change their mind and become somewhat different in belief....For those of The True Christian Faith, The Body of The Church, there is no turning from The Truth.
For those of The Faith there is no hatered towards any individual or group of individuals... There are those who act against or are openly stating that they are enemies of The Church... against those there is some defence allowed... this is not intolerance...
All of The True Christian Faith are, in their Faith, alike. and if there is a difference between Faith and the way of The world, those of TheFaith will unite in Faith before the world.

Some gays cannot stand overzealous flag waving parading gays.
Some christians cannot stand cross waving bible thumping christians.
Deal. Thats whay I say
we need someone a little overzealous to push forward change, wether or not in the direction the zealous choose. I wouldn't want the Utopian ideal, everyone happy with each other, because nothing would be done to better the society. Strife creates change for the better.

You're right there is a great deal of diversity in all groups of people. As a gay person I often get tired of correcting people who think that I am apart of a "lifestyle" that I'm not (and when I say "lifestyle" I don't mean the "gay lifestyle" I mean the one type of lifestyle that some gay people engage in as well as many straight people I know like going to bars and clubs, partying, etc. I'm a Hindu and that says more about my "lifestyle" than the fact that I'm gay).
I don't try to compartmentalize and when I do it's never on purpose and probably don't realize I'm doing it (which is why it's nice to have folks who will point it out to me). I know there are a lot of differences. Most of my friends are of various different groups and we are all diverse and each of them is diverse within the larger groups they participate and belong to (or labels that they wear). I have straight friends, gay friends, Christian friends, Jewish friends, Buddhist friends, Muslims friends, UU friends, Atheist friends, transgendered friends, friends from all races, friends from various ethnic backgrounds, friends that are immigrants in the process of citizenship and friends that are natural born citizens, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

I think I get what you are saying, but...
We are dealing primarily with a group without the Holy Spirit, or faith.
We have the renewing of our minds, but the same appeal to non-believers may get stopped from any effectiveness because the human darkness just wants to stop the word of God.
We do our work, God does the rest....

That's cool. But you must agree, that although this is true, everyone likes to take the most extreme candidate of a group and make him/her the representative of that group. Think Ann Coulter with conservatives, or Michael Moore with liberals.

a real Christian won't be in a position to be gay... (a million Corinthians 6:9) What! Do YOU not understand that unrighteous persons won't inherit God’s kingdom? don't be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor adult males stored for unnatural applications, nor adult males who lie with adult males, (a million Timothy a million:10) fornicators, adult males who lie with adult males, kidnappers, liars, fake swearers, and despite different ingredient is in opposition to the healthful coaching a real Christian might obey the Bible.

It is okay to be gay. It is okay to be a xtian. It is the recruitment procedures of xtianity that I cannot tolerate. Most xtians are pompous, ignorant, closed minded, uncultured elitists that cannot hold a decent conversation. However, you are correct...there are a few...like 4 or 5 of you that are alright.
