Do crunches work for losing weight and gaining muscle? What else should I do to add to my workout regime?

I am a Personal trainer and this is a common question. If you don't combine crunches with other excercises to balance, including Cardio, you're not likely to lose the pudge or "tighten those abs" A full body workout with weights or machines 2 times a week will only take you 20 minutes for all the major muscle groups. If you do 20 minutes of Cardiovascular exercise 3 times a week, you will boost your metabolism which will help with any weight loss you are trying to achieve. Those 2 things combined(along with healthy eating)has always been the quickest and most effective way to shed pounds or "tone the muscles". I also know that eating alot of refined sugars and flours causes the stomach to bloat and have water gain so at some point you might try avoiding those and see if it makes a difference.

Crunches don't actually burn a lot of calories. You need to do aerobic work for that. They will build some muscle but they will not help you lose a lot of fat down there. Try these suggestions.

Burn more calories than you eat. Take in about 2000 a day.

Cut your fat intake.

Eat three cups of fat free low cal yogurt a day (make sure it has live cultures in it).

Do 45-60 min. of aerobic exercise a day (preferably before you eat in the morning).

Do 20 min of weight training three times a week.

Get a book or video on abdominal work. Remember that to make your stomach FLAT you need to PULL IT TO YOUR SPINE when you work it, when you sit, when you stand, all the time.

I lost 40 lbs in two months and have kept it off for two more months doing this. I also took my body fat % from 30% to 14%

Be Blessed

Crunches strengthen, build muscle, and tone. It takes a fair amount of time to see results. Just remember that the muscle is under fat. To see any results, you have to lose the fat. While the crunches will burn some calories, you'll need to supplement them with some sort of cardio program such as running or aerobics. They all need to be done on a constant schedule. Starting low and working your way up is a decent way to get started though.

Crunches are for toning your abs. You won't lose any weight , and you'll only build muscle if you do the crunches while holding weights.

I do push-ups and crunches every night before bed and i after work sometimes. I've never been heavy. but the military do crunches and push-ups, squad rums, and jogging. and they lose weight. as for me i just gain abs and pecs. so keep it up. it takes time, set a goal what you want to lose and gain for mussels just keep it reasonable.

Yes, they do work and yes, it's worth it. Just be sure not to pull from your neck. It's a repetitive action that can injure you over time. Remember to concentrate on using your abs to pull yourself up and not your upper body. Takes a lot of focus to do it right. Here's the little known trick outside of fitness circles: When you pull up, breathe out. It's opposite from how your body wants to do it, and as you breathe out, pull your muscles IN TIGHT. If you don't do this, it will build your muscles out and give you a muscle pooch. Build them in tight instead. If you go too far, yo ucan correct it by making it a priority to pull them in as tight as you can for as long as you can for a few days. THat will flatten them out and strengthen your abs at the same time.
