Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve. The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard him say it. On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there…

When evening came, they went out of the city. In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!"

"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

Because the tree was being decieving. It was a parable to teach about the Pharisees in the Temple. That even though the Pharisees may seem wise and able to lead and teach, doesn't mean they have fruit to share.

Looking at the fig tree, what use is it if it appears to have fruit yet gives none? If the tree doesn't have fruit when it should, it's of no use when your hungry. The same for the Pharisees - if they don't teach truth and understanding yet appear to do so, then they are of no use either.

Jesus was both human and divine. Much of what he did was a demonstration of his divine power. Since he was a man he experienced anger from time to time. His divine nature in the spoken word caused the tree to wither as he is creator and master of all nature.
There is also a spiritual lesson in the withered tree. If we do not "feed" the spiritual in our nature, we do no good. We wither. Figs were a staple food of the region. The tree was not functioning or serving to nourish the human need of Christ who was also divine. I'll have to check, but I don't believe the scripture says it was not the season for figs. I believe it was. Christ was not unreasonable.

I think that there were many purposes for this- Jesus was reinforcing the teaching regarding the creative and destructive power of the tongue, He was also demonstrating true faith , and most importantly, He was painting a picture - those that bear fruit for the kingdom will flourish, there is no use for those that do not bear fruit and they will wither.

People that don't produced fruit will be burned, cut off, trimmed, chored whatever he wants to do, He is God. he created everything, so if He does not think you are living up to His expectations, you got to go. Are you producing fruit, or do you need a trimming?

Because it wouldn't bear fruit. Same with people who don't fulfill their purpose, like christians are given spiritual gifts but if you wouldn't use them, how can God give you more... even what you have may be taken away from you.. no, not really taken away.. but you will like forget how to use it.. like it's not there anymore.

It is a parable of what happens to someone when they have no fruit or works. Genuine good works can only come from someone who is reborn or given a good heart from God.

From what I understood when I read the story in the bible, it decieved him. It looked like there were fruit on it. but when he went to get some fruit, there was none, so he cursed it.

That was His curse on Israel for not accepting Him as their King and Savior And if you recall, it was about 75-90 years later, that Israel was overrun by the Phillistines (Palestinians).
