None of these answers are correct! The first 'steam engine' was invented in 1BD by the mathematician Hero of Alexandria. This was a device called the aeolipile, in which steam was conducted through pipes from a boiler to a sphere which had two jets from which the steam could escape. Hero's engine was probably a toy and not put to any useful purpose but it remains undeniably the worlds first steam engine.

The answers about Hero of Alexandria, Savery, Newcomen, Watt, and Stephenson are all good.

Hero's aeolipile showed that steam could do work, but he didn't use it for that, just as a demonstration toy. Savery first got work out of a stationary engine, Newcomen did it better and found a market for them (mostly in coal mines), and Watt did it best of all and really got the Industrial Revolution going. Then Stephenson built the first useful MOVING steam engine. So take your pick.

Thomas Savery started the idea with the first crude steam engine in 1698, Thomas Newcomen improved the idea and took it further in the 1700's and James Watt was the lucky man who's design became the dominent one in 1769 !
A quick search on Google will give you a lot more information, it's really interesting stuff .

James Watt refined and improved the existing steam engine by the introduction of a 'governor' and a higher standard of manufacture all round. George Stephenson converted it in to a practical working locomotive. Of course without steam pressure they would never have existed.

No the Chinese had a working model traction engine in the 1600's and what about Hero's engine (BC), James Watt only improved on the idea and made one suitable for industrial use, the idea was already there.

I agree with Kimmy also about Watt and Savery, but it must also be said that Trevithick did a lot of good to the development of the engine also.
