Dunno bout that.. there is a Chevron refinery on the big island. They get a lot of feed from Suadi Arabia and Singapore. Probably because demand is less there and more isolated... see.. here on the mainland, there is so much consumption.. the refiners can make 20 cents per gallon where over there, they cant make enough profit to make it reasonable to sell there, but they have to... so they have to drive up the price. Sucks I know. Move to Maui and then you can ride a bike everywhere.

PS - THERE ARE REFINERIES IN HAWAII :)

I don't know much about how fuel is transported to gas stations, but is it possible that the increase in price is due to extra hassle actually getting the fuel to Hawaii?

I assume it works the same way that milk is so expensive in Prince Edward Island... they don't have cows of their own so it needs to be shipped over (which adds to cost).

Because Hawaii has to import ALL of their gas & oil by cargo ship. Whereas most states just bring theirs in via tanker truck from other states.

There are no refineries in the Islands. All of the gas is imported by tankers. This increases the cost of the fuel. Finally, the island price modifier. Things on islands cost more than things on the mainland.

Its the added cost of shipping it there. The crude oil sent from russia, canada, middle east to the us and is converted to gas on the continental us. then they ship it back out to Hawaii

have you been to hawaii? if you do, they explain it better while you are on board on those tour buses.

hawaii is an island and required shipping charges for all the commodities being imported to the "paradise" it's all worth it anyway. imagine an extra buck to check out the ambiance? no comparison, plus it's not going to drain your wallet to tour the whole island in one day. you better believe it, i would rather spend my sunny day over there, than a regular sunny day in california. let's trade...
