You too?? I'm 50 years old and I still get sick before a dental appointment. Afterwards, my neck and shoulders ache from so much tension while 'in the chair' -- the actual procedures are nothing compared to my mental torture. To me, it's the idea of fingers, metal, scraping, digging, drilling in my MOUTH for heavens sake that really wigs me out. I have found a reasonable 'fix', however. I now have a dentist that , (and I kid you not), doesn't hurt. Never. It's just enough to get me through. Man I'm a baby!

the dentist is a normal scary place, after all they are in your face with tools that look really creepy. The sound and smells and everything you take in at the office is just scary by it self. There is a bigger population of people afraid of the dentist than of spiders. Everything people do in a round about way they do with their mouth, eat, smile, frown, any facal expresions, people put alot of stock in their looks and that includes largly their teeth and what some people go through to get the teeth they want can be really bad. Plus for most people tooth or any kind of mouth pain is the worst pains there is. Sociaity associates alot with looks and mainly the head anf face area. Teeth can either make or break a persons looks.

Everyone is! I suppose it is because of the noisy
vibration and the ever expecting pain that never
really comes. Only a few years back, it was much
worse with the slow, rough electric drills. Now in
present days, pain is 90% fear and 10% imagination.
Also, the mouth is a very personal and tender place
to be poked so remember that your Dentist does this
all the time, so he knows what he is doing. Trust him
and all will be fine.

It's a common fear some people have. I was so scared of the dentist as a kid that I didn't want the WORD mentioned at all. What scared me was that when I was going for my x-ray and I cried for my mom; the dental assistant scolded me and it took them forever to get my x-rays. That turned me off of dentists for a few years or so.

To be honest, even Dentists don't like going to see a dentist. Most fears are from childhood experiences. When most kids get treatment they cry or whine.

I read a great article about going to the dentist. Do a few things beforehand. Smelling lavender can relax you. In addition, bring a walkman/discman/mp3 player so you can listen to it as they check out your mouth. I have a whole list I got from some magazine that brings up this fear. You can email me if you want.

I always been terrified to go and I had really bad teeth all thru school cuz I wouldn't go unless I was like about to die. Had to have quite a few pulled along the way. Finally had all my teeth pulled out soon as I was 18 so I don't have to go now.
