PLEASE do not go into debt for this totally unnecessary item. You can get engaged without a ring. Set the money aside for the wedding and for your life together instead.
I have seen nice rings at our local secondhand stores for $80. If she really loves you she should not even need a ring, or need an expensive ring. There are lower cost rings (art glass and other alternative substances) at relishstyle.com too.
Also check greenkarat.com for recycled gold wedding bands at decent prices.

It has been my experience that jewelry stores do have layaway. I know that Zales has layaway and they are a national chain. If you are not comfortable going in person, then you could get out your phone book and call around to jewelry stores in your area and ask them if they have layaway. I'm sure that you will find what you are looking for. If you decide to go with Wal-Mart, you should know that they plan to discontinue their layaway program by mid November.
Best of luck to you and your fiance!

Try www.yourengagementring.com They do layaway online for 12-14 weeks and the prices are wonderful. You can get a 1 carat solitare for $600 in 18K white gold!

There is no way to find a "great" engagement ring for under $1000. If you find a ring for $1000 it will be cheap and nasty. I don't think that's the message you want to send to your girlfriend. Also, if you have to buy the ring on layaway, you're not prepared to get married. If you're serious about this woman, than you should save up your money and buy her a decent ring.

I'm serious - they have an amazing selection of certified engagement rings. Check it out. And 70% of them are under 1,000 dollars...and the best part, since there is bound to be a store near you, you can put it on layaway!

If it has to be on lay-away ...your stuck with a retail store.... if you can pass alittle cash ...look into local Pawn shops ....just buy the stone ...for the ring..... only the stone. Then save your cash and find a local retail store or jewler to make of get the ring & mounting for the stone... you can save tons of cash and it's much more personal to design / put togeather the pieces for your lady. I'm sure she will love the extra effort .... you got a stone then searched for the right ring to put it in for her ..... A much bigger impression than picking one outta a catalog ...
Congrats!!

I suggest Sam's Club.
I also think you should talk to your girl. You can get a lot of nice rings for $1000, but maybe not a great diamond. I would think about waiting on the diamond and just focus on getting a beautiful ring.
