I recently found a puppy. He resembles a German Shepherd but his ears are not pointed. He is only about 2 months old, so I was wondering if they could still perk up.

Very few dogs are born with erect ears ready. The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) is not one of these breeds. GSD pups have their ears start pointing between 3-6 months depending on the dog not the breed. It is common for a pup to have his/hers ears erect by the 4th months then suddenly droop for a couple days or weeks and then stand up again by the time they reach 6 months. Remember, it depends on the dog not the breed. At two months or 8 weeks, he should only now be ready to be released to any outside owners and be taken away from his mother. Wait another 2 months before starting to worry about the ears. If by 5 months the ears aren't pointing or starting to point or pointing again, you may need tape to help the dog. It is rare but you can tape a GSD's ears but it is ONLY done after the 5th month. Unlike other breeds which is done between the 3rd-4th month. Also, you said you found the dog and RESEMBLES a GSD. Understand that he may not be a full bred GSD. If he is a mix, depending on what his parents are, his ears may not stand or point. Don't be disappointed if they don't. His parents just didn't carry the gene.

They do NOT crop shepherd ears. Shepherds are born with ears down and as they grow the cartilage in the ears starts to set and they stand. Sometimes people who are showing or breeding will train the ears to stand by taping them or glueing them using a product called tear mender. If the dog is not a show dog and does not need perfect ears there is no reason to do this and eventually they will stand on their own.

Yes they will pick up if he is a german shepherd it take a little time when they start to grow and develope. My puppy ears were up when he reached the age of five months. Every dog is different but you will see the changes in the coming months. Best of luck and always love your animals.

Take him to a vet and find out what type of dog he actually is. My dog is not shepherd, but her pups ears did not stand up on a full time basis till they were a little older. I can't imagine puppies being born with their ears standing up, but that may be a short sighted imagination.

Shepherd puppies are born with floppy ears, which are usually cropped by hand to give them a sharp, well-groomed look. The ears don't 'perk up' on their own. If the cartilage in the ears is broken, or creased, and they don't match, the cropping could restore a symmetrical look. B.

no, they are born with floppy ears, and they stand after they get older. usually around 5 or 6 months the Will start to stand a little bit... I had a pup that her ears were not fully erect till she was a little over a year old... You can take him to a vet, and they can tell you what type he is, and about how old he is

okay well first off it needs yard space and if its going to be an indoor dog it needs to be walked everyday maybe sometimes even more than once. dog food that is healthy. a dog bed for inside or dog house for outside. a brush to properly brush it everyday to be clean and prevent too much shedding. flea and tick shampoo because fleas have been bad this year around where i live. some chewing toys so it doesnt chew up your shoes or other valuable things and if you dont want something chewed on then keep it off the floor because puppies will chew on anything. you need to take it to the vet so it can get its shots it needs regurlarly. try to avoid giving it table scraps at first when its a puppy because its not good for them and if you switch dog foods at anytime be careful because it may upset theyre stomache. thats all i can think of for now i have an alaskan malamute who lives in doors so i know what its like to have a bigger dog. goodluck and enjoy your new companion! german shepards can be great dogs! oh and btw you might want to save up to have it fixed in the future because larger girl dogs are messier when they are in heat

Like many dogs if the owner wants the ears to perk, he will need to shape them. When I was younger, we owned a collie, and I remember my dad having to shape them with cotton and tape.

Remember, do not crop (cut) or let anyone else crop a dog's ears.
