Why have I come home everyday for the past week and done nothing but sit around on the computer...for at least five hours at a time? Does anyone else have this occasional problem? It's not chornic, but it really bugs me when I do this. I get nothing done.
I'll eventually wear myself out and go do something life-like, but there's no telling when that will happen? I need more suggestions than just a simple "GET OFF AND SHUT THE COMPUTER DOWN" because I'll just go back to it within the hour. Do I have obsessive-compulsive disorder with my computer?

Wow. Sorry, that came out wrong. I should have put less emphasis on the OCD and more on the HELP part. It's okay, though...I will learn how to ask clearer questions.

This is called 'Impulsive - Compulsive Internet / Computer usage'.
This new disorder will be under Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders in the coming version DSM V. You may get help from doing CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). If your problems are so severe you can take an SSRI.

I have OCD and I don't think your problem sounds like OCD at all. Maybe you are just bored and enjoy being on the computer, or you might stay on the computer to either keep busy or avoid doing something you don't want to do. Some people use it as an escape, they don't want to deal with some things in their lives and just put their lives on a hold and spend time in the computer instead of solving problems. Or you could be addicted to the internet. But whatever your reason for doing this is, it is not OCD.

How to stop it? Well, how about giving yourself a choice, to either waste your time/life with the computer or turn it off and use your time for something better? Ask yourself what's better, what you really want to do with your time and life.

By the way, a lot of people who get this problem at some point. Most of them get over it eventually, it's maybe just a phase you're going through.

I have OCD and I don't compare your sitting on the computer that long as and OCD problem. OCD comes from something that you are constantly doing over and over again, like for me, it is rearranging the silverware drawer making sure that the forks and spoons and knives do not touch one another keeping them seperate, and I am always washing everything, when I do laundry, I have to wash the clothes 3 times before I will put them in the dryer. Things of this nature are brought on by stress or things that happened in the past that your mind is trying not to remember. So don't worry about it being OCD, I myself spend alot of time on my computer like at times for over 6 hours daily. Then I get bored with it and don't even turn it on, but it is not a OCD problem, it is just a boredom problem for me when I spend that much time on it.

yes, it is an escape. the computer can be a wonderful escape for people...it's a great way to learn, talk to other people, research anything you want to learn, shop and buy things. it becomes a problem when you are using it as an escape from a stressful life. five hours does seem very excessive. but i must admit, i have done it before. it was usually when i was tired and bored and lonesome or frustrated. i don't believe that you have ocd....but (yes!) turn the computer off and go out and experience life...go for a walk or go to the library and find a great book....:)

Perhaps it is seeking out of comfort with less risk, to get rid of some kind of feeling of loneliness, or seeking out a sense of genuine belonging ...
No problem really, it should resolve by itself in some time. Try sitting calmly before the computer, and slow down the activity consciously, taking time to think deeply about what is being typed out .

I'm not a doctor, but, NO, you do not have OCD! That is not a symptom of OCD. It is a symptom of being bored and unstimulated. You are simply in a rut, temporarily just lacking in stimuli....so, you should go get some stimuli. Not that asking that question online helps any.....but, just find something you like to do....

It's an escape when you're stressed about other stuff. No you probably don't have OCD. I think all those personality labels are a crutch so people don't have to take responsibility for their lives and then they can make excuses.
