You can't find a cheap Southwest flight?
Its been many a year since I took a bus ride, good luck!
They stop at these greasy spoons to eat, with horrible food.
I found it to be a very depressing experience. But then again, maybe thats good sometimes.
I would personally pop a few tranquilizers the whole trip and mellow out.
Not meaning to scare you, but there are some real weirdos on those buses. Be careful. Criminals, wackos, predators. Keep your guard up. Its not a bad idea to partner up with a "normal" kind of person. You can tell pretty easily.
Don't take candy from strangers!

It has been years since my last bus trip but from the advice of others here it sounds like not much has changed. From your profile, I would suggest keeping you Bible on your lap, and the MP3 player is an especially good idea. I liked the idea someone had about the stun gun, lol, hope you won't need that. I do recommend going with the hand sanitizer (Purell etc.) and plenty of moist towelettes, I would add a small can of Ozium to your list. Travel safely.

Stay visible to the driver. Don't stray too far when the bus stops for breaks or lunch. They will leave without you. Enjoy the scenery. Take a pillow if you have space. A book, mp3 player, or PSP can help pass the time. I like audiobooks on tape. If you are traveling with friends, then take a deck of cards.

Take a pillow, a cd player, a portable dvd player and plenty of batteries. You should also take some snacks with you. I wish I would've taken a portable dvd player with me last month when I went on greyhound. Btw, be prepared to make plenty of stops and for the bus to be packed. Btw, every time you change buses, make sure you get your own luggage and put it on the next bus. It reduces the chances of it getting lost.

dress like Rosie O Donnell so no one hits on you. Be aware of the fact that the further away from the bus driver you sit the crazier you are. So the little old ladies with the blue hair sit directly behind the driver and the Charles Manson could-have-beens- occupy the last seat
Just keep your whits about you, know what's going on in the world around and you'll be fine

Bring a pillow for your feet. Makes a lot of difference in comfort.
And don't eat any cheese before you go or during the trip. Eating cheese sometimes causes feet and ankles to become swollen. Leave the bus every chance you get and walk around to keep your circulation going.

Carry a small cooler with snacks ,couple of small pillows, a good novel, if you can read without becoming nauseated, while riding, and try to find someone to sit next to who loves to chat if you do. The front usually affords a better ride as well.

Load up the i-pod for sure and get one of those neck pillows (much better than an actual pillow---I used one on a flight to Hong Kong and it SAVED me) and attitude to keep any unwanted attention to a minimum.

My brother took a bus from Tennesee to Chicago a couple of years ago.....
His advice ....or comments...?
He chose to sit near the bathroom......& he said that every time somebody used it ...well ...the opening & closing of the door alone ....the ODOR was awful ....
BIG mistake...
So don't sit near THERE.
