Yes. The fungi that cause nail infections are related to those that cause athelete's foot, jock itch, and other fungal infections. They are usually present in damp public areas such as gyms and locker rooms. Be sure to wear something on your feet (like cheap flip-flops) when in areas like this.
Jobs that cause the hands or feet to be damp for extended periods of time can contribute to the growth of fungus in nails. Always keep your feet as dry as possible, and change socks frequently.
Fingernail polish may also contribute to nail fungus, as it does not fully allow the nail to breathe. Most people will not develop a fungal nail infection simply from wearing too much fingernail polish, but if an infection is present, it may be wise to stop using such products. Yes, if you share shoes and unwashed socks. That is what athletes' foot is afterall(fungus) and it is highly contagious.
