Who knows? They oppose a lot of things that make no sense. Used to be a sin to eat meat on Fridays too Ha.. Dumb huh? Couldn't marry outside the church! Ha. If you were not catholic you'd never go to heaven! Ha. Could not creamate a body. Ha.
Too women used to have to cover their heads in church. They opposed the 'pill" and any form of birth control except rhythum... like that would work. Haven't seen a hat in years. So I guess they don't and won't do for the millaners what they did for the fishermen.
Does it matter that they oppose anything as important as stem cell research.?

The Catholic Church holds the belief that all human life is sacred, and that life begins at the very moment of conception. And yes, to them that means the moment a sperm and an egg meld and their DNA combine to create the DNA of a human being.
As I understand the situation, current stem cell research involves using tissues of embriotic (or is it pre-embriotic) cells, which to the church means they are experimenting on what should have been a human life. I don't know how these cells are harvested, but I gather it involves cells that were "alive" before medical intervention, to the church opposes it.

They don't oppose stem cell research. They oppose EMBRYONIC stem cell research. They don't believe in harvesting eggs from a woman, removing the nucleic material and inserting someone else's nucleic material, or messing around with an existing embryo. Animal research on these stem cells has only produced cancer so far.
However, they do support ADULT stem cells. These can be taken from the patient's own tissues. Promising work is being done on this type of stem cell.

The Catholic Church does not oppose all stem cell research.
It only opposes "embryonic" stem cell research where the stem cells are taken from aborted human embryos.
The Catholic Church is not just against abortion, it is pro-life in the widest sense. This is often called a "Consistent Ethic of Life."
This pro-life stance stresses the highest regard for dignity of human life including that of:
- All people in objecting to unjust war and nuclear arms.
- The unborn in objecting to to abortion, in fitro fertilization, frozen embryos, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning
- The elderly, sick and dying in objecting to assisted suicide and euthanazia
- Prisoners in objecting to the death penalty
- The poor and minorities in supporting social justice issues.
With love in Christ.

Because they actually believe a embryo is a human being, while stem cell research can save thousands of lives, the government bans the research as if they have lost all resoning in their minds
It's how you use the cells people, and scientists could've saved some lives too.....

Read the articles for more background and info.

The Greek Orthodox Church, as a member of NCC, supports stem cell research because of its pro-choice Greek American politicians.
The Antiochian Orthodox Church, who withdrew herself from the NCC, is against stem cell research.
Orthodoxy as a whole is AGAINST stem cell research because the destruction of the embryo is no different from that of abortion.

-The Church opposes creating life for the purpose of destroying it. This includes creating embryos for in-vitro fertilization and stem cell research.

I didn't know it was just the Catholic Church. Isn't it most pro-life supporters who oppose it?
