No offense but it sounds like you spoke to someone with either a misunderstanding of engineers or someone who simply thinks that they are useless. True that you could find yourself with a career that is a degreed mason, but a good engineer is much more than that.
I've seen both the good and bad in engineers. I've seen people with experience but no formal college education who are more useful than many engineers. I've also seen engineers who have used their education and skills to do incredible things. Personally, I recommend the education route since you take less time to gain basic knowledge and skills.
The ability to be an engineer versus a glorified mason is up to you once you've got the education. Being a good engineer has more potential to be lucrative, rewarding and enjoyable. But some people enjoy doing the least amount that they can.

Nope.
You design a bridge, and sign off as an engineer. If it fails 80 years later and kills someone, you are liable. They teach you how to design civil structures: buildings, roads, dams, etc... so they will not break.
If you want to be a mason with a title, get in with a certification program, or an apprenticeship. If you want to understand how what you are building works, and be able to be safe betting your life and hundreds of peoples lives on it, then you need something a lot more than a certificate.

it is not true.
civil engineers need mason for their job.
masons are manpowers needed for
civil engineering works.
in between mason and civil engineer there is one
more post which is called "civil overseer".civil overseers work
together with mason for construction work .masons are controlled by civil overseer and civil engineer will control both.
civil enginering involves higher level works like designing, planning and supervision.
while supervising construction work ,civil engineer meets both masons and civil overseers otherwise civil engineer works alone.
in western countries civil engineer works hard and they are mostly found in site with mason but in eastern countries civil
engineers work less and order their subordinate more.
this is all because of east/west working system.

not true one bit! don't listen to people like that...they don't know what they're talking about. your best resource would probably be people in civil or do some research on the internet.

yea pretty much.... its like being a foreman on the job.... civil engineers can branch into things like building inspection and stuff like that though, so do what you want to do. i say if your interested in engineering go for computer stuff.... you will never have to scramble for a job
