Wow, lots of people who get their legal info from TV on this website, and at least one who hates gun owners. I pity the people who's police are this ignorant of firearms laws.
I make my own silencers on ATF form 1's, 6 so far. Lots of fun and perfectly legal in 35 states. There are absolutely no federal laws banning silencers. Machineguns, silencers and short barreled shotguns are all regulated by the NFA of 1934. The $200 tax associated with their purchase or making was intended to reduce the number owned by civilians. It worked until 1986, by then inflation had reduced the hefty tax to a mere irritation. In 1986, a law was passed forbidding the registration of new machineguns for civilians, thus with a fixed supply, an M16 worth about $500 costs over $12,000 now for private owners. Check www.subguns.com for prices. No license is needed, the ATF does not come knocking when you send in the required forms for buying or making one, and you do not sign away your rights to a search of your home either.
Dealers and Manufacturers (FFL's and SOT's) are a different thing all together. They get inspected prior to getting the license and are subject to yearly unannounced visits by compliance agents during business hours only. At other times, they need permission or a warrant.
To buy or make a silencer, just submit an ATF form 4 or 1, along with certification of citizenship, photos, $200 check and fingerprints to the BATFE. Pick up or make after approval. It is not hard, unless the local sheriff refuses to sign, then you need to find another person who can sign, or form a corp.
The most common injury associated with firearms use is hearing loss. While a silencer is not likely to reduce the noise level to below 100 decibels, a well made silencer does much to reduce or prevent hearing lose to shooters and bystanders. BTW, the word silencer is a legal term, and a marketing gimmick created by MAxim when he marketed his first suppressors/moderators.

Silencers are felony for civilians in 36 states of the Union such as Virginia. There are not any federal regulations banning silencers. The national Firearms Act of 1934 calls for that they be registered and in straightforward terms the BATFE can authorize their flow or making/manufacture. this does not propose they are banned. because of the fact the BATFE immediately approves the AFT sort 4’s to flow and ATF sort a million’s to make silencers, it is not clever to declare they are banned or “banned with particular exceptions”. some states say silencers are banned aside from those registered with the BATFE, meaning any felony silencers are felony of their state. Texas and a few different states try this. there's a $2 hundred tax to pay, besides as determining to purchase your community sheriff’s signature on the style. It takes various of months for approval maximum circumstances, yet I incredibly have under no circumstances heard of the BATFE no longer approving any right crammed out ATF sort a million or 4 for every physique who became allowed to possess a silencer. Edited to function; The be conscious silencer is a felony term utilized by utilising the government. they are extra wisely noted as moderators or suprpessors. If a silencer is offered utilising an ATF sort 4 or made with an ATF sort a million, this does not negate your 4th modification rights to unreasonable searches. in straightforward terms FFL/SOT's (sellers, importers, manufacturers) are project to one (area of the contract to get the license) unannounced/unwarranted inspection in step with annum throughout the time of company hours in straightforward terms. All others can shy away any unwarranted tries to learn their silencers or machineguns. Ranb

First, the proper term is suppressors-and yes they are legal for civilians federally....some states however severely restrict or prohibit possession. If I recall they are legal in 38 states in the US. They are lumped in with title 2 weapons and regulated much like automatic weapons and short barrelled shotguns/rifles. If they are legal in your state you must submit the application for registration to the ATF with local law enforcement endorsement, pay a 200.00tax and be subjected to background check . If all is approved you can then get your suppressor

Silencers are legal only in certain states I believe. The only way to find out what states or counties in the US are allowed to have them is to check out the gun laws. Usually gun laws are governed by county and not by state, but I would be very suspicious of someone with a silencer.

Silencers are illegal in all 50 states for civilians. You can own certain silencers if they fall into a "collector" category and you have a special collectors license. However, this license is also a type of dealer license and very hard to get, not worth it unless you intend to go into business or are just independently wealthy.

Usually not, but I do know someone who got a permit for one. He had to talk with ATF and his state gun licencing people. Why would you want one anyway if you are a law abiding citizen? Just a collectors' item?

even police depts in the usa are held to STRICT federal guidelines...civilians can purchase silencers and machine guns but be prepared to pay hefty federal tax stamps and be subjected to warrantless searches....they are cool but not worth the $$$

If they work they are bulky and destroy range and accuracy, just use a 22, it is quiet enough that most people do not even notice or think it is a door slamming.
