I would recommend CutePDF writer. Its free and it will allow you to "print" your word document out to a PDF file. There is a link below.
Download both files. The converter and the program.
Again you will need to PRINT your document to create the PDF file. Just change your printer to the CUTEWRITER and click ok.

Though Microsoft might be adding features to its latest Word to support PDF output, older versions do not. But, there is a solution - even if you do not have Microsoft Office programs!
Download OpenOffice.org - from http://openoffice.org/ - and install it. OpenOffice will read your Word document and output it to PDF format. It will also convert to a non-proprietary format supported by libraries and governments around the world (and an ISO standard) that Microsoft is fighting against tooth and nail. It's called ODF, or Open Document Format.
OpenOffice is open source software, available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Good luck!

Ok, I do it all the time. you can do everything using Microsoft Word. you don't need any other software!
after you finish your word document,
go to "print"
then when the print screen shows up, look at the bottom left corner and there is a button called "PDF", click on that and "save as PDF". your saved file should now be openable by Acrobat, Preview, etc.
** note, I use the Mac version and windows may be different
