He is out of federal loan funding and is currently seeking a cosigner. He's also working full-time but he has limited time in which to finish because the university is phasing out his program in January 2008! He has 4 courses to go including his dissertation. Does anyone know of a good grant he could apply for or perhaps, an organization that could help him secure the loan?

It is not unheard of for students to use http://www.prosper.com for loans to help finance education. It is, at the very least, something to consider.

He is still pretty far away from finishing. If the college if phasing out his program, who is going to supervise his two or three full years minimum of research? He is not in a good position. Probably he could get a MA or MS from the program he is in now and then apply at a different school that has a degree program that is not folding up. And, he needs to go to a school that has financial support for grad students. Nearly every school has this, so why isnt he getting it?

I have to say, also, that if he has used up all his loans and still needs $30,000 more he is in really seriously bad financial shape. Unless his field is one where there are a lot of jobs available at big salaries right out of school, there is no way he can pay back this money!!!! Remember that even if you declare bankruptcy, you can not get rid of student loans. They are excluded from settlement by bankruptcy. So, he could be wrecking his entire life, financially speaking, by going through this program.

He really needs to think over what is happening. Borrowing another $30,000 is not a good option for someone in his position!
