Gin derives its main characteristic flavor from juniper berries. In addition to juniper berries, other botanicals may be used, including angelica root, anise, coriander, caraway seeds, lime, lemon and orange peel, licorice, calmus, cardamom, cassia bark, orris root, and bitter almonds. The use and proportion of any of these botanicals in the gin formula is left to the producer, and the character and quality of the gin will depend to a great extent on the skill of the distiller in formulating his recipe. The more discerning producers formulate their aromatic ingredients on the basis of the essential oil content in the raw materials to assure a greater degree of product uniformity.

Juniper berries are the primary flavor in gin, but there are, or can be, many other botanicals in it depending on the recipe of the particular brand. If you look at a bottle of Bombay Sapphire, they actually list theirs on each side of the bottle.
Since it starts out as neutral spirits before the juniper and other flavors are added, it's almost like vodka. There are also different methods of adding the flavors. Some just soak the botanicals for a while, strain off, and call it gin. Others will redistill the neutral spirits, and the botanicals will be in the vapor of the still where it picks up the essences, and when it's condensed, they're in the final gin as it's condensed.

it's made from the distillation of white grain spirit and juniper berries.
and it's good as hell with tonic water and a squeeze of lime.
or even better, with Perrier. (you can get perrier that already has lime flavor, and it's damn good.)
