The least they could have done was give it some "romance novel" spice.
Book of Smut 1:1 - 2
1Yea Shapepth tooketh his shirt off and hiseth pecks dideth glisten with sweat in the morning sun.2 Myraslom's bosom dideth heave mightily as her loins ..........
It would have been a MUCH more entertaining book to read.

Wow, what Bible are you reading? I've read my Bible cover to cover several times and i never even heard of those folks. I guess I'll have to go read it again.
All the begats were necessary at the time they were written because at that time, it was the history of the Jewish people. It contained the names of their ancestors, much like Native American stories often list their ancestors.
The genealogy is not necessary to understand or enjoy the story but if you are connected to the major players, it will have more meaning to you. All most people need to be concerned with is the Biblical "fact" that we are all descended from Noah and before him from Adam and for Christians to know that Jesus's lineage matched prophecy.

Some of what you are talking about is actually the family genealogy of a royal family. If you aren't into family archives, then you can skip that stuff.
For me, it just reinforces the fact that "everybody has a story". Maybe we don't do anything more important than get up everyday, go to work, come home, love our family, have kids, be nice people, grow old, and die. Nothing spectacular. You might think that some of the people in Jesus' family "tree" did little more than just that; we don't know anything of their stories, other than they existed. Still, they were remembered. God noticed what they did.
He notices us too. No matter how small and unimportant we think we are. Maybe all we are called to be is just...normal...people...and that is ok. Nothing un-Biblical about it!

Is any of the world's great literature necessary?
The most boring parts of the Bible are still more interesting than most of the conversations in Hemingway novels.

That´s why i became an agnostic. I still believe in love and compassion, but without all that biblical nonsense. I also don't have to lower my head to the "envoys of god" elected by men

and yes. everything in the Bible is there for a reason.
It either points to the Geneology of Christ or helps our understanding of life span, inheritance, belssings, etc....

All that is meant to illustrate the bloodline of Jesus, at least according to Christians.
I think it's pretty useless and boring, though, and did as a Christian, too.

everything there is there for a reason
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
look under the hood of your car, you may not know why all that stuff is there, that doesn't mean its not necessary
