Males and females generally differ most in aggresiveness.
Males are generally more territorial, so unless training steps are consistent, marking could be a problem. (Neutering may help alleviate this problem).

The male is more aggressive and the female is usually more territorial. I have always owned female shepherds they are better around people than the males. I think the females are just a lot friendlier. I also think that the males are not as clingy.
Either way shepherds are very devoted to their owners.
If you want one to use a watch/guard dog I would choose a male. If you want one for a family pet I would choose a female.

I have a male and a female they are both very smart dogs.It seems like the female was easier to train, but both are very loyal.Take good care of them and they will take good care of you.Feed them a quality dog food and they will live a long happy life.My male will be 17yrs old in may and my female will be 8yrs old in dec.

Real answer:
I have found that female dogs are more docile/calm than male dogs. I have had good male and female dogs though. I don't really prefer one gender over the other.
Good luck with your choice. I had a female German Shepard when I was young. She was a great dog!!!

If trained, male shepherds are really aggressive, and you can teach them to attack a specific target. But sometimes, even when they approach innocent people, they still attack. Females are less aggressive, but still attack targets. They are also pretty hard to run or bike away from, for their more agile than males.
