Prohibition against: Exodus 20:16 " You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

Exodus 23:1 "You shall not utter a false report. You shall not join hands with a wicked man, to be a malicious witness."

See also Leviticus 19 for verses directly addressing slander.

The punishment for telling lies, especially in court, was severe. A person bringing false evidence against somebody in court, when discovered, recieved the punishment he intended for his victim! If Bob told lies against Larry in court, so that Larry would get a public beating (and was discovered to be lying), then Bob would get the public beating!
