I haven't been diagnosed with it, but i identify very strongly with the characteristics/traits of Borderline Personality. It doesn't affect my life as such..well obviously it does, but not to a full blown extent. I still manage to get by. I want to talk to a psychiatrist about it but am worried about the cost. I am currently studying and working parttime so I am basically living from paychecks to paychecks. Just want to know if anyone is in a similar situation? Or any advice?

Trust me, if you had BPD you would have been diagnosed by now, and would be on medication.

I will put it to you like this: People with anxiety disorders think everything is wrong with them and nothing is. People with personality disorders think nothing is wrong with them, but there is a lot wrong! The fact you are concerned about it tells me you most likely don't have it.

Personality disorders are patterns of maladaptive behavior which have existed from a young age and persisted into adulthood. They are usually caused by pathological (harmful) care to the individual during childhood, or extreme stress during childhood.

Another aspect to this is that personality disorders are normal personality traits gone awry. So everyone is going to identify with some symptoms in all the personality disorders. People with these issues are completely inflexible and have a very hard time seeing why their behavior is causing them problems. They are treatment resistant and typically are not at all interested in changing.

So I can reassure you that you most likely do not have this problem. Maybe it is just more social skills or developing relationships with other people. Either way, you are probably fine!

If you live in a larger city the county human services will likely have a income based program to help you. You won`t be getting Dr. Freud or anything but maybe they can talk to you and give you some options.

Check with your college, they may have some suggestions or even offer help. You are probably making little enough to access medicare. Check that out too, your college may also have their number. I understand that people with Borderline personality disorder can't self monitor very well (I could be wrong). You are very wise to have made this realization.
