My mom says I can only start dating when I'm 23. She'll have no legal countrol over me, but..........well you know. I was thinking about going out on my freshman year of college. Not when I'm 23.

16. Waiting to date until 23 would actually stunt your emotional developement. School isn't just about learning what is in books, it's about learning to interact with other people, of both genders. Younger than 16 I don't think you have the emotional maturity to handle the questions that usually arise in a relationship.

Once you're 18, your mom has no say or legal control over it. While she might have good intentions, I don't think she's being realistic. I do feel it's important to concentrate on school and your studies now, but geez, it's just a date... sounds like she needs to lighten up a bit.

My daughter started dating in middle school, provided she kept her grades up (which she did, while staying on the honor roll). Of course, she was very mature for her age too. She also started working in high school over the summer. She started taking college courses during her junior and senior year in high school, then started working a co-op job as part of her school day, and volunteering at a hospital (since she was looking to get into the medical field).

While that's a lot for anyone to take on at once, and most people can't handle that much of an overload (I know I can't)... she was determined to pull through, and did it. It's just mind over matter, your drive and determination.

What the heck? I have 3 daughters, the oldest being 8 the youngest 3. 8th grade maybe even 7th grade to begin dating (what is that, 12 or 13?) That's when I started. 23 is just too over protective . . . you need to grow emotionally and psychologically.

I believe in showing your parents respect but you do need to break away, too . . .

It depends on the person. I do believe that dating is an important part of high school and college. It allows you to grow as a person, interact with your peers and know the type of things you enjoy and need from a future mate.

It is however, important to maintain a balance in your life. Your schooling is important and vital to your future as are friends and family. Talk with your mom and figure out what is best for you.

This is the time of your life that you are discovering yourself.

Enjoy and stay safe.

I think that 16 and up. dating meaning going to the movies, talking on the phone and things like that. As long as you and him respect each other let him know what your not ready for and ask him questions. Dating is a form of sociology and this is how we learn about ourselves and learn about others. We learn about what we like what we dont like and this is how you build your charater so at this age 16 you are learning all of these things and dating is part of life. Its normal for a female and male to be attracted to each other. Now sex is another story that involves **babies and deseases** so I would stay away from that until you finish highschool focus on your career.

Parent of one 19 year old and one 21 year old. I told my children to wait until they were 16+ to date. Why is your mother wanting you to wait until you are 23? That is a bit too controling in my opinion.

23??? that's ridiculous, she must be giving you a high number so you won't keep trying to make it younger & younger...lol.

I think 16 is a pretty good age, but my daughter started dating her high school sweetheart when she was 15, because we really liked him, and he was a level-headed boy who we knew we could trust.

We didn't have any set age.... but no matter how old she got, as long as she lived here, we insisted that she couldn't go out with anybody until they came to the house and were introduced to us.

My theroy is that dating is when you find out what you like and dont like in your future spouse. Dating is not going to bed with him/her, it's going to the movie, out to dinner, skating, walking in the park. things like that. Time to get to know each other out of the bed room. For stuff like that I dont see any problem with after high school. You are of leagal age by then in most states.
